According to tradition, Edla was the daughter of a [Lechitic](/source/Lechites) [tribal chief](/source/tribal_chief) who ruled the region between the [Oder](/source/Oder) and [Elbe](/source/Elbe) rivers, in what is now [Mecklenburg-Vorpommern](/source/Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). King [Olof Skötkonung](/source/Olof_Sk%C3%B6tkonung) took Edla as his concubine.<ref name=":0" /> Later, he married Estrid. Edla became the mother of Emund, Astrid, and likely Holmfrid. [Snorre Sturlasson](/source/Snorre_Sturlasson) notes that her children were sent to foster parents away from the royal court because Queen Estrid was unkind to them. This may suggest that Edla died while her children were still young.<ref name=":0" />
