**Editor's Note** (April 26, 1993 - December 12, 2022) was an American [thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/Horse_racing). He was sired by 1992 U.S. Champion 2 YO Colt [Forty Niner](/source/Forty_Niner_(horse)), who in turn was a son of [Champion sire](/source/Leading_sire_in_North_America) [Mr. Prospector](/source/Mr._Prospector) and out of the [mare](/source/Mare_(horse)) Beware Of The Cat.

Trained by [D. Wayne Lukas](/source/D._Wayne_Lukas) and ridden by [René Douglas](/source/Ren%C3%A9_R._Douglas), who was given the assignment after [Gary Stevens](/source/Gary_Stevens_(jockey)) was injured, Editor's Note is best known for his classic stretch duel with [Skip Away](/source/Skip_Away) in the 1996 [Belmont Stakes](/source/Belmont_Stakes), beating [Preakness Stakes](/source/Preakness_Stakes) winner [Louis Quatorze](/source/Louis_Quatorze_(horse)), who was unplaced. This was the same race in which the [Santa Anita Derby](/source/Santa_Anita_Derby) winner, [Cavonnier](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cavonnier&action=edit&redlink=1), bowed a tendon and was unable to finish.

With the death of [A.P. Indy](/source/A.P._Indy) on February 21, 2020, Editor's Note became the oldest living winner of the [Belmont Stakes](/source/Belmont_Stakes). Upon the death of [Grindstone](/source/Grindstone_(horse)) on March 22, 2022, Editor's Note became the oldest living winner of any of the Triple Crown races of thoroughbred racing.

## Retirement

Editor's Note was originally retired in 1997 to [Overbrook Farm](/source/Overbrook_Farm) in Lexington, Kentucky, but was exported in 2004 to [Argentina](/source/Argentina).
