For the UK Parliament constituency, see [Edinburgh East](/source/Edinburgh_East). **Edinburgh Eastern** ([Gaelic](/source/Scottish_Gaelic): *Dùn Èideann an Ear*) was a [constituency](/source/Scottish_Parliament_constituencies_and_regions) of the [Scottish Parliament](/source/Scottish_Parliament) covering part of the [council area](/source/Council_areas_of_Scotland) of [Edinburgh](/source/City_of_Edinburgh_Council). Under the [additional-member system](/source/Additional-member_system) used for elections to the Scottish Parliament, the seat elected one [Member of the Scottish Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_Scottish_Parliament) (MSP) by the [plurality (first past the post)](/source/First-past-the-post_voting) method of election, and was also one of nine constituencies in the [Lothian](/source/Lothian_(Scottish_Parliament_electoral_region)) [electoral region](/source/Scottish_Parliament_constituencies_and_regions), which elected seven additional members, in addition to the nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form of [proportional representation](/source/Proportional_representation) for the region as a whole. The constituency was created for the [2011 Scottish Parliament election](/source/2011_Scottish_Parliament_election), and includes areas that were formerly part of the constituencies of [Edinburgh East and Musselburgh](/source/Edinburgh_East_and_Musselburgh_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)), [Edinburgh South](/source/Edinburgh_South_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)), which were abolished, along with an area formerly in the [Edinburgh Central](/source/Edinburgh_Central_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)) constituency, which was retained on new boundaries at this review. As a result of the [second periodic review of Scottish Parliament boundaries](/source/Second_periodic_review_of_Scottish_Parliament_boundaries), the constituency was abolished ahead of the [2026 Scottish Parliament election](/source/2026_Scottish_Parliament_election). The area covered by the former constituency was divided between the new seats of [Edinburgh Eastern, Musselburgh and Tranent](/source/Edinburgh_Eastern,_Musselburgh_and_Tranent), [Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith](/source/Edinburgh_North_Eastern_and_Leith) and [Edinburgh Southern](/source/Edinburgh_Southern).[2] The seat had been held by [Ash Regan](/source/Ash_Regan) since the [2016 Scottish Parliament election](/source/2016_Scottish_Parliament_election) until its abolition in 2026. Regan had originally been elected as an [SNP](/source/Scottish_National_Party) member; she defected to [Alba](/source/Alba_Party) on 28 October 2023, and subsequently left it on 10 October 2025, sitting as an [independent](/source/Independent_politician) from then until the dissolution of parliament. ## Electoral region See also: [Lothian (Scottish Parliament electoral region)](/source/Lothian_(Scottish_Parliament_electoral_region)) During the period Edinburgh Eastern was in existence, the other eight constituencies of the Lothian region were: [Almond Valley](/source/Almond_Valley_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)), [Edinburgh Central](/source/Edinburgh_Central_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)), [Edinburgh Northern and Leith](/source/Edinburgh_Northern_and_Leith), [Edinburgh Pentlands](/source/Edinburgh_Pentlands_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)), [Edinburgh Southern](/source/Edinburgh_Southern), [Edinburgh Western](/source/Edinburgh_Western), [Linlithgow](/source/Linlithgow_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)) and [Midlothian North and Musselburgh](/source/Midlothian_North_and_Musselburgh_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)) In this period the region included all of the [City of Edinburgh council area](/source/City_of_Edinburgh_Council), parts of the [East Lothian council area](/source/East_Lothian_Council), parts of the [Midlothian council area](/source/Midlothian_Council) and all of the [West Lothian council area](/source/West_Lothian_Council). ## Constituency boundaries and council area During the period Edinburgh Eastern was in existence, [Edinburgh](/source/Edinburgh) was represented in the [Scottish Parliament](/source/Scottish_Parliament) by six constituencies: [Edinburgh Central](/source/Edinburgh_Central_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)), Edinburgh Eastern, [Edinburgh Northern and Leith](/source/Edinburgh_Northern_and_Leith), [Edinburgh Pentlands](/source/Edinburgh_Pentlands_(Scottish_Parliament_constituency)), [Edinburgh Southern](/source/Edinburgh_Southern) and [Edinburgh Western](/source/Edinburgh_Western).
