It is one of 23 SSSI's in the [West Midlands](/source/West_Midlands_(county)). The site has two distinct units (areas) within it. The first is water-related and contains the {{convert|7|ha|km2 sqmi}} lake and the input channel of the [Chad Brook](/source/Chad_Brook) as well as some land that is either [marsh](/source/marsh) or lake depending on the season. The second, the smaller section is [woodland](/source/woodland). In total the site measures {{convert|15.93|ha|km2 sqmi}}. Also known as Edgbaston Park,{{cite book|last=C. W. K. W.|title=Edgbaston Park, 1937|publisher=[Birmingham Bird Club](/source/Birmingham_Bird_Club))|location=Birmingham|year=1938|series=Annual Report on the Birds of Warwickshire, Worcestershire and South Staffordshire|volume=4|url=http://www.westmidlandbirdclub.com/archive/edgbaston-37|accessdate=2010-02-15|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110611071851/http://www.westmidlandbirdclub.com/archive/edgbaston-37|archivedate=2011-06-11 |url-status=unfit}} the site is based on [glacial](/source/glacier) [sand](/source/sand)s and [gravel](/source/gravel)s overlying sandstone from the [Late Triassic](/source/Late_Triassic) period. Maps from the 18th century show there used to be two ponds on the site but one has now been naturally filled in and overgrown. Access can be gained when visiting Winterbourne Botanic Garden - admission charges apply. The pool's bird life has been recorded since at least the 1860s and has included [hooded crow](/source/hooded_crow), [nightingale](/source/nightingale), [nightjar](/source/European_nightjar) and [hawfinch](/source/hawfinch). However, in January 2012, the [Birmingham Natural History Society](/source/Birmingham_Natural_History_Society) announced that, after many years, it was withdrawing from its formal role in the management of the SSSI (whose designation it was instrumental in securing), due to a decline in the number of volunteers able to carry out that role.
