**Eddy Ko Hung** ([Chinese](/source/Chinese_language): 高雄; [Jyutping](/source/Jyutping): *gou1 hung4*; born **Ho Yiu-sum** (何耀深); 13 December 1937) is a [Hong Kong](/source/Hong_Kong_people) actor and martial artist. He has appeared in over 150 film and television roles since his debut in 1969. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Chan Chung in the 1984 Hong Kong action war film *[Heroes Shed No Tears](/source/Heroes_Shed_No_Tears_(1986_film))*, and Hong in the 1998 American buddy cop action film *[Lethal Weapon 4](/source/Lethal_Weapon_4)*. Most recently, he has made appearances in several international films including 2015's [*The Martian*](/source/The_Martian_(film)).

## Early life

Ko was born **Ho Yiu-sim** in [Zhongshan](/source/Zhongshan), [Guangdong Province](/source/Guangdong) in 1937, and moved to [British Hong Kong](/source/British_Hong_Kong) with his family as a child.[1] He trained in [kung fu](/source/Kung_fu) and [judo](/source/Judo), and was a [lion dancer](/source/Lion_dance).

## Career

Ko joined [Shaw Brothers Studio](/source/Shaw_Brothers_Studio) in the late 1960s as a [stuntman](/source/Stuntman), and made his film acting debut in 1969, adopting the name Ko Hung as a [stage name](/source/Stage_name). He is also sometimes also credited as Ko Hung, Gao Xiong, Eddie Ko, Edward Ko, and Lin Sheng (林琛).[2]

Throughout the 1970s and '80s, he appeared in numerous [martial arts films](/source/Martial_arts_film). Some of his best known films of this time include *[The Avenging Eagle](/source/The_Avenging_Eagle)* (1978, dir. Sun Chung), *[The Butterfly Murders](/source/The_Butterfly_Murders)* (1979, [Tsui Hark](/source/Tsui_Hark)'s directorial debut), *[The Postman Strikes Back](/source/The_Postman_Strikes_Back)* (1982, dir. [Ronny Yu](/source/Ronny_Yu)), and *[The Miracle Fighters](/source/The_Miracle_Fighters)* (1982, dir. [Yuen Woo-ping](/source/Yuen_Woo-ping)).

Ko played the leading role in [John Woo](/source/John_Woo)'s 1984 film *[Heroes Shed No Tears](/source/Heroes_Shed_No_Tears_(1986_film))*.

Ko joined [TVB](/source/TVB) later and has since acted in many TV drama series. In 1990, Ko joined TVB's rival [ATV](/source/Asia_Television) and worked there until 1995. In 2000, Ko rejoined TVB and continued acting in many TVB-produced drama series.

Within the Chinese community, Ko's most remembered performance was in the 1995 version of the television drama *[Fist of Fury](/source/Fist_of_Fury_(TV_series))* as [Huo Yuanjia](/source/Huo_Yuanjia), the mentor of [Chen Zhen](/source/Chen_Zhen_(character)). This role led to similar martial arts mentor roles, subsequently.

In 1998, he migrated his family to [Canada](/source/Canada), and co-starred in a role of an illegal immigrant in *[Lethal Weapon 4](/source/Lethal_Weapon_4)*, in his first international role.[3] Since then, he has appeared in American, Hong Kong, and Mainland Chinese productions.
