Born in [Winston-Salem, North Carolina](/source/Winston-Salem%2C_North_Carolina), Lyons signed a contract out of [Richard J. Reynolds High School](/source/Richard_J._Reynolds_High_School) with the Washington Senators when he was 17.<ref name="obit">{{cite news|title=Edward Lyons obituary |work=[Winston-Salem Journal](/source/Winston-Salem_Journal) |date=January 26, 2009}}</ref> While in the minor leagues, his [baseball](/source/baseball) career was interrupted by World War II when he joined the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy).<ref name="obit"/> He made his Major League debut with the Washington Senators in 1947. He played 7 games at [second base](/source/second_base) and [hit](/source/hit_(baseball)) .154 in his only season in the Major Leagues. When his playing career ended he became a [manager](/source/Manager_(baseball)) for the Senators, [Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox), and [Cardinals](/source/St._Louis_Cardinals) organizations.<ref name="obit"/> His coaching career came to an end after a leg injury and he served as a [scout](/source/Scout_(sports)), ending with the [Chicago Cubs](/source/Chicago_Cubs) in {{Baseball year|1995}}.<ref name="obit"/> He was inducted into the Winston-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.<ref name="obit"/> After his retirement, he resided in [Clemmons, North Carolina](/source/Clemmons%2C_North_Carolina) and died on January 25, 2009, in Winston-Salem.<ref name="obit"/>
