He was a member of the [Western Australian Legislative Council](/source/Western_Australian_Legislative_Council) (MLC), representing the [North Metropolitan Region](/source/Electoral_region_of_North_Metropolitan) from 1996 until 2013. Dermer was re-elected at the [2001](/source/2001_Western_Australian_state_election) and [2005](/source/2005_Western_Australian_state_election) state elections, and held the position of government [whip](/source/whip_(politics)) in the Legislative Council from May 2001 to September 2008, and opposition whip from then until his retirement in May 2013.<ref>{{cite web |title=Hon. Dermer was one of the three North Metropolitan Labor MLCs, including [Graham Giffard](/source/Graham_Giffard) and [Ken Travers](/source/Ken_Travers), who were critical to the introduction of [daylight saving](/source/daylight_saving) in [Western Australia](/source/Western_Australia) in 2006. ==Personal life==
In 2008, Dermer was caught in a [rip current](/source/rip_current) with his sons, Alexander and Cameron, while holidaying at a [Surfers Paradise](/source/Surfers_Paradise) beach. Dermer and Cameron had to be rescued by lifesavers.
