'''Economics education''' or '''economic education''' is a field within [economics](/source/economics) that focuses on two main themes:
*The current state of, and efforts to improve, the economics curriculum, materials and pedagogical techniques used to teach economics at all educational levels; and
*Research into the effectiveness of alternative instructional techniques in economics, the level of economic literacy of various groups, and factors that influence the level of economic literacy.<ref>" W.E. Becker (2001), Economic Education," ''[International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences](/source/International_Encyclopedia_of_the_Social_%26_Behavioral_Sciences)'', pp. 4078-4084.

Economics education is distinct from [economics of education](/source/economics_of_education), which focuses on the economics of the institution of education.
This article discusses the field conceptually, and also provides a general outline of the typical curriculum.

===Characterization===
Akarowhe found that Economics Education can be seen as a process, science and product:
<ref>"Akarowhe, K (2018). Role of Economics Education in Sustainable National Development. Journal of Global Economics 6(3): 298.</ref>
*as a process - economics education involves a time phase of inculcating the needed skills and values on the learners, in other words, it entails the preparation of learners for would-be-economics educator (teachers) and disseminating of valuable economics information on learners in other for them to improve their standard of living by engaging in meaningful venture;
*as a science, it means that it is a body of organized knowledge which is subjected to scientific test;
*as a product, economics education involves the inculcation of saleable values/skills/disposition which are desirable by employers of labour and the society at large.

===Organizations===
Numerous organizations all over the world devote resources toward economics education.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://london-post.co.uk/top-four-global-organizations-that-revolutionize-economics-education/|title=Top four global organizations that revolutionize economics education|date=2019-07-26|website=London Post|language=en-GB|access-date=2019-07-26}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://prfaces.com/the-reform-of-economics-education/|title=How Technology is Helping the Reform of Economics Education|website=PrFaces Blog|access-date=2023-03-14}}</ref>

In the United States, organizations whose primary purpose is the advancement of economics education include the [Council for Economic Education (CEE)](/source/Council_for_Economic_Education) and its network of councils and centers, [Federal Reserve Education](/source/Federal_Reserve_Education) (FRE),<ref>{{Cite web |title=Home |url=https://www.federalreserveeducation.org/ |access-date=2025-04-09 |website=Federal Reserve Education |language=en}}</ref> the [Foundation for Teaching Economics](/source/Foundation_for_Teaching_Economics) and [Junior Achievement](/source/Junior_Achievement). The U.S. [National Center for Research in Economic Education](/source/National_Center_for_Research_in_Economic_Education) is a resource for research and [educational assessment](/source/educational_assessment) in economics. Among broader U.S. organizations that devote significant resources toward economics education is the [Federal Reserve System](/source/Federal_Reserve_System).

In the United Kingdom there is [The Economics Network](/source/Economics_Network), a government-funded national project to support economics education in [Higher education](/source/Higher_education) contexts, and the non-profit Economics & Business Education Association (EBEA) for [secondary education](/source/secondary_education). The non-profit organization [Rethinking Economics](/source/Rethinking_Economics) is an international network of students and teachers promoting a change in the economics education towards more critical engagement, pluralism of theories and real-world applicability of the discipline. The movement has gained widespread support, among others by the [Bank of England](/source/Bank_of_England).

On a global scale, especially in Asia and Africa, there is the Global Association of Economics Education (GAEE), a non-profit organization that transforms [conventional curricula](/source/Traditional_education) into free, [interactive learning](/source/interactive_learning) platforms aligning to daily-life and real-world problems.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.reuters.com/brandfeatures/venture-capital/article?id=127245|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190703014219/https://www.reuters.com/brandfeatures/venture-capital/article?id=127245|url-status=dead|archive-date=2019-07-03|title=Global Association of Economics Education Launches 'GAEE's Silk Road Plan' - Reuters|website=Reuters|access-date=2019-07-07}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://scalar.usc.edu/works/ibusiness/economics-education-needs-a-reform-and-its-all-about-the-real-world|title=Economics education needs a reform, and it's all about the real world - iBusiness Scalar|website=University of Southern California|language=en|access-date=2019-07-07}}</ref>

Journals devoted to the topic of economics education include the ''[Journal of Economic Education](/source/Journal_of_Economic_Education)'',<ref>[http://www.indiana.edu/~econed/ Journal of Economic Education]</ref> ''International Review of Economics Education'',<ref>[http://www.economicsnetwork.ac.uk/iree International Review of Economics Education]</ref> ''Australasian Journal of Economics Education.''<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.uq.edu.au/economics/ajee/ |title=Australasian Journal of Economics Education |access-date=2007-08-06 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070217144559/http://www.uq.edu.au/economics/ajee/ |archive-date=2007-02-17 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

Many organizations, such as ''[The Economist](/source/The_Economist)'',<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.economist.com/open-future/2019/06/19/terms-and-conditions-for-young-peoples-essay-contests|title=Terms and Conditions for Young People's Essay Contests|date=2019-06-19|newspaper=The Economist|access-date=2019-12-27|issn=0013-0613}}</ref> ''[Financial Times](/source/Financial_Times)'',<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.ft.com/content/7a082bc6-75a3-11e9-bbad-7c18c0ea0201|title=Entries open for young economist of the year|date=2019-05-13|website=Financial Times|language=en-GB|access-date=2019-12-27}}</ref> [Royal Economic Society](/source/Royal_Economic_Society),<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.res.org.uk/education/young-economist-of-the-year.html|title=Young Economist of the Year|website=www.res.org.uk|access-date=2019-12-27}}</ref> and [Institute of Economic Affairs](/source/Institute_of_Economic_Affairs),<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://iea.org.uk/essay-competition/|title=Student Essay Competition|website=Institute of Economic Affairs|language=en-GB|access-date=2019-12-27}}</ref> offer essay competitions for economics students.

===Reform===
University-level economics curricula, particularly introductory courses, have been criticized for putting undue emphasis on [neoclassical economics](/source/neoclassical_economics) - with its key assumptions of individual rationality and market equilibrium, described in the next section - and failing to explain real-world economic phenomena such as the [2008 financial crisis](/source/2008_financial_crisis);<ref name="ft-change-of-course">{{cite news|url=https://www.ft.com/content/dfd84240-dcd5-11e3-ba13-00144feabdc0|title=Economics: Change of course|last=Jones|first=Claire|date=May 16, 2014|website=Financial Times|access-date=April 19, 2019}}</ref>
see {{slink|Mainstream economics#Criticisms}} and {{slink|Financial economics#Challenges and criticism}}.

In response, the ''CORE Project'', for example, has developed course materials, including a textbook called ''The Economy'', that emphasize real-world applications in economics.<ref name="new-yorker">{{cite magazine|url=https://www.newyorker.com/news/john-cassidy/a-new-way-to-learn-economics|title=A New Way to Learn Economics|last=Cassidy|first=John|magazine=The New Yorker|date=September 11, 2017|access-date=April 19, 2019}}</ref>

[Literacy-Targeted instruction in economics](/source/Literacy-targeted_instruction_in_economics) argues that the principles level course has too many models and content for an introductory course. The LT approach emphasizes a goal of economic literacy by focusing on a limited number of core concepts to foster deep understanding and real-world application.

==Curriculum==
{{see|Outline of economics}}
Economics is widely offered as a [major subject](/source/academic_major), and often as a specialized degree.

Economics is also studied as a stand-alone course in [business-](/source/business_education) and [finance degrees](/source/Outline_of_finance), with the purpose of informing [management-](/source/Management_accounting) or [investment decision making](/source/investment_decision).

===Economics programs===
The typical economics [curriculum](/source/curriculum), and degree structure, summarizes as follows.<ref name = "THE"/><ref name = "BLS"/><ref name="Independent"/>
The core theory comprises [microeconomics](/source/microeconomics) and [macroeconomics](/source/macroeconomics), as well as [econometrics](/source/econometrics) and [mathematical economics](/source/mathematical_economics);
as the student progresses, so the coverage becomes more abstract and mathematical.
The various [branches of economics](/source/Economics) and [areas of application](/source/applied_economics) are built on this base.
Some degrees in fact specialize in [applied economics](/source/applied_economics), [econometrics](/source/econometrics), [political economy](/source/political_economy) or [economic history](/source/economic_history).
For further discussion see [Bachelor of Economics](/source/Bachelor_of_Economics) and [Master of Economics](/source/Master_of_Economics); for a listing of universities specializing in economics, see [:Category:Economics schools](/source/%3ACategory%3AEconomics_schools).

Micro- and macroeconomics begin with the joint-concepts of [supply and demand](/source/supply_and_demand).
Microeconomics develops these respectively for firms and individuals, assuming
businesses seek to [maximize their profit](/source/profit_maximization) under the various [regimes of competition](/source/Outline_of_economics),
and that consumers, similarly, are attempting to [”maximize utility”](/source/Utility_maximization_problem) given their resources;
the price will correspond to the point where [supply and demand are equal](/source/market_clearing), i.e. a "[partial equilibrium](/source/partial_equilibrium)".
Macroeconomics focuses on the sum total of economic activity - similarly analyzing [various equilibria](/source/Macroeconomics) - covering the performance, structure, behavior, and decision-making of an [economy](/source/economy) as a whole.
At the “intermediate” level, microeconomics extends to [general equilibrium](/source/General_equilibrium_theory), to an analytic approach to demand-modeling where curves are derived from [utility function](/source/utility_function)s, and to [game theory](/source/Game_theory) as [applied to competition](/source/Oligopoly), and hence supply;
intermediate macroeconomics covers [various advanced models of the economy](/source/Macroeconomic_model), differences between [schools here](/source/History_of_macroeconomic_thought) (particularly [New-Keynesian](/source/New_Keynesian_economics), [New-classical](/source/New_classical_macroeconomics), and [Monetarist](/source/Monetarism)), and the related [policy analysis](/source/Macroeconomics).
At the graduate level, the treatment focuses on [microfoundations](/source/microfoundations) - where macroeconomic models aggregate microeconomic results - and [dynamic stochastic general equilibrium](/source/dynamic_stochastic_general_equilibrium), allowing for [heterogeneity](/source/Heterogeneity_in_economics), thereby relaxing the idea of a [representative agent](/source/representative_agent).
In many programs, approaches from [heterodox economics](/source/heterodox_economics) are introduced at more advanced levels, especially [behavioral economics](/source/behavioral_economics) and [experimental economics](/source/experimental_economics); here, the key ideas of [individual rationality](/source/Homo_economicus) and equilibrium are questioned, and the relevant topics are then revisited.

Econometrics concerns the application of [statistical methods](/source/statistical_methods) to economic data so as to give empirical content to economic relationships. The study begins with the [single-equation methods](/source/Single-equation_methods_(econometrics)), i.e. [(multiple)](/source/Multiple_linear_regression) [linear regression](/source/linear_regression), and progresses to [(multivariate)](/source/multivariate_time_series) [time series](/source/time_series), [simultaneous equation methods](/source/Simultaneous_equation_methods_(econometrics)) and [generalized linear model](/source/generalized_linear_model)s;
at the graduate level, the treatment in parallel emphasizes the underlying statistical theory.
Students are trained on [packages](/source/Application_software) such as [STATA](/source/STATA), [EViews](/source/EViews) and [R](/source/R_(programming_language)).
Mathematical economics may be studied in its own right, or via incorporating advanced mathematical-techniques into the micro- and macroeconomic courses; commonly applied are [optimization methods](/source/mathematical_optimization) and [dynamic systems modelling](/source/Dynamical_systems_theory) (for cases of ["dynamic equilibrium"](/source/Economic_equilibrium) as above). At advanced levels, [real analysis](/source/real_analysis) is used to abstract the economic relationships studied. Courses in [decision theory](/source/decision_theory), [game theory](/source/game_theory) and [(agent-based)](/source/agent-based_computational_economics) [computational economics](/source/computational_economics) may be taught separately.
Many universities offer the further specialized Bachelors and Masters "in Econometrics / Mathematical Economics / Quantitative Economics".

Applied economics concerns the application of economic theory and econometrics in specific settings, and to practical issues.
As above, the various applied-fields are offered as (optional) courses in the economics degree, following core-work.
"Applied Economics Degrees" - bachelors and masters - do cover the core theory, but, often, with a reduction in the number of theory courses, allowing more choice and flexibility in the degree composition.
At many schools, specifically focused (and [named](/source/tagged_degree)) degrees are offered in [agricultural economics](/source/agricultural_economics), [development economics](/source/development_economics), and [financial economics](/source/financial_economics).
Some master's level applied economics programs train students in [data-driven analytics](/source/Business_analytics) and [business decision-support](/source/Decision_support_system), combining microeconomic theory and econometrics with the student's selections from [data science](/source/data_science), [operations research](/source/operations_research) and [finance](/source/finance).
Applied economics topics are taught in other programs, as relevant - for example [health economics](/source/health_economics) and [engineering economics](/source/engineering_economics) are offered in the [MPH](/source/Professional_degrees_of_public_health) / [MHA](/source/Master_of_Health_Administration) and [M.Eng.](/source/Master_of_Engineering) respectively - but with a reduction in the level of theory.

===Business degrees===
In [business degrees](/source/business_education) - undergraduate and masters - a course in "economics for managers", or the like, is typically a program requirement.
Here the macroeconomic element deals with topics relevant to [commerce](/source/commerce), such as inflation, business cycles, exchange rates, the banking system, and the money supply;
the microeconomic element mainly focuses on the [managerial economics](/source/managerial_economics) relating to product pricing, industry structure and competition.
The theory is largely at the "supply and demand" level.
Elements of econometrics may be incorporated into a [business statistics](/source/business_statistics) or [business mathematics](/source/business_mathematics) course.
See {{sectionlink|Master of Business Administration |Content}}.
The high school courses listed, largely mirror this content; their theory discussion may overlap the first courses in the major.
Many undergraduate business degrees offer economics as a major, with the structure largely as above, although often with fewer theoretical and mathematical courses.

===Finance programs===
Economics is commonly combined [with Finance](/source/Outline_of_finance) as an undergraduate [double major](/source/double_major); depending on the program, the economics coverage may be theoretical, as for the standard degree, or applied, as for business degrees.
Similarly, [Professional certification programs](/source/Professional_certification_in_financial_services), such as the [CFA](/source/Chartered_Financial_Analyst) and [CIIA](/source/Certified_International_Investment_Analyst), often include topics in economics.
At the postgraduate level, the macroeconomic element will, again, be similar to the business masters, but may also emphasize forecasting - which is widely applied in [resource allocation](/source/resource_allocation) and other financial applications such as [financial analysis](/source/financial_analysis) - and is then (slightly) more theoretical.
Managerial-type microeconomics may be included in programs with a strong business focus, such as the [Master of Science in Finance](/source/Master_of_Science_in_Finance); otherwise, microeconomics is ''explicitly'' included only in the more theoretical [Master of Finance](/source/Master_of_Finance) programs, here emphasizing concepts from [financial economics](/source/financial_economics) such as [expected utility](/source/expected_utility) (regardless, relevant concepts are covered when required as underpin to a specific module).
