The **Eastern Expedition**[1] encompassed the [Taiping Heavenly Kingdom](/source/Taiping_Heavenly_Kingdom)'s efforts to capture the [Yangtze River Delta](/source/Yangtze_River_Delta), the provinces of [Jiangsu](/source/Jiangsu), [Anhui](/source/Anhui), and [Zhejiang](/source/Zhejiang). Most of the areas would eventually be occupied by the Taipings, but they were notably repulsed at several locations, especially the city of [Shanghai](/source/Shanghai). Following the [Jintian uprising](/source/Jintian_uprising) in the southern province [Guangxi](/source/Guangxi) and the beginning of open hostilities, Taiping forces attacked and captured [Nanjing](/source/Nanjing) in central China by 1853. The [Western Expedition](/source/Western_Expedition) captured cities along the Yangtze River like [Zhenjiang](/source/Zhenjiang), [Anqing](/source/Anqing) were captured later the same year[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

When [Hong Rengan](/source/Hong_Rengan) arrived in Tianjing in 1859, he became one of the most senior military officials. Hong used a strategy to draw Qing's attention away from Tianjing by attacking areas to the east like [Hangzhou](/source/Hangzhou) and [Suzhou](/source/Suzhou). Then Taiping forces counter attacked Qing armies besieging the capital, successfully lifting the siege.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] In 1860, during the [Second rout the Army Group Jiangnan](/source/Second_rout_the_Army_Group_Jiangnan) (1860) Taiping forces captured the following cities: [Changzhou](/source/Changzhou) (May 26),[2] [Wuxi](/source/Wuxi) (May 30),[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] [Suzhou](/source/Suzhou) (June 2),[2] [Wujiang](/source/Wujiang%2C_Jiangsu) (13 June),[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] [Jiaxing](/source/Jiaxing) (15 June). [Ningbo is captured](/source/Occupation_of_Ningbo) by the Taipings in December 1861. Taiping armies advanced towards Shanghai by 1861, but [were repulsed](/source/Battle_of_Shanghai_(1861)) with the help of foreign mercenaries like the [Ever Victorious Army](/source/Ever_Victorious_Army).[2]
