East Tanfield was historically a [township](/source/Township_(England)) in the [ancient parish](/source/ancient_parish) of [Kirklington](/source/Kirklington%2C_North_Yorkshire) in the [North Riding of Yorkshire](/source/North_Riding_of_Yorkshire).<ref name=vch />  It became a separate civil parish in 1866.<ref>[http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10471000/relationships Vision of Britain website]</ref>  It was transferred to the [Richmondshire](/source/Richmondshire) district of North Yorkshire in 1974. Richmondshire was abolished in 2023 and a new unitary authority, [North Yorkshire Council](/source/North_Yorkshire_Council), replaced it.
