The **East Line**[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] ([Danish](/source/Danish_language): *Østbanen*) is a local railway line in the eastern part of [Zealand](/source/Zealand), [Denmark](/source/Denmark). The railway started operations on 1 July 1879.[1] It is today part of [Lokaltog](/source/Lokaltog), a [railway company](/source/Railway_company) operating nine local railways on the islands of [Zealand](/source/Zealand), [Lolland](/source/Lolland) and [Falster](/source/Falster).[2]

Since December 2020, trains have run every 30 minutes between [Roskilde](/source/Roskilde_station) and [Faxe Ladeplads](/source/Faxe_Ladeplads) via [Køge](/source/K%C3%B8ge_station) and [Hårlev](/source/H%C3%A5rlev). There are also connecting services from Hårlev to [Rødvig](/source/R%C3%B8dvig) with a 3-5 minute connection time. The journey time from Roskilde to Faxe Ladeplads is 68 minutes.[3][4]

The stations of [Himlingøje](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Himling%C3%B8je_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1), [Lille Linde](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lille_Linde_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1), and [Tokkerup](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tokkerup_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1) are outside of their respective villages, and it is even further between [Faxe South](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Faxe_South_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Faxe](/source/Faxe) and from [Vallø](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vall%C3%B8_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1) to [Vallø Castle](/source/Vall%C3%B8_Castle). In addition to the [termini](/source/Terminal_train_station), trains can pass at [Egøje](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eg%C3%B8je_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1), [Vallø](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vall%C3%B8_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1), [Grubberholm](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Grubberholm_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1), [Klippinge](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Klippinge_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1), [Hårlev](/source/H%C3%A5rlev_railway_station), [Karise](/source/Karise_railway_station) and [Store Heddinge](/source/Store_Heddinge_railway_station); [Faxe South](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Faxe_South_railway_station&action=edit&redlink=1) has a short siding, the remaining line is [single track](/source/Single_track_railway) and without electrification.

All of the [station buildings](/source/Station_building) on the line were designed by architect [Heinrich Wenck](/source/Heinrich_Wenck).[5]

Since 2009 [Alstom Coradia LINT 41](/source/Alstom_Coradia_LINT) trains have been in use.[6] In 2020, the rail infrastructure was reaching the end of its lifetime and there were political discussions about converting Østbanen into a [guided busway](/source/Guided_busway).[7] In June 2021 a majority in the [Danish Parliament](/source/Folketing) voted for an infrastructure agreement securing the future of Østbanen as a railway.[8] The track renovations were completed in September 2024.[9]
