# East Keal

**East Keal** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) in the [East Lindsey](/source/East_Lindsey) [district](/source/Non-metropolitan_district) of [Lincolnshire](/source/Lincolnshire), England.[1] It is situated approximately 13 miles (21 km) north from the town of [Boston](/source/Boston,_Lincolnshire), 2 miles (3 km) south from the town of [Spilsby](/source/Spilsby), and is located on the southern most edge of the [Lincolnshire Wolds](/source/Lincolnshire_Wolds), an [National Landscape](/source/Area_of_Outstanding_Natural_Beauty) and marks the point where the Wolds gives way to the flat [Lincolnshire Fens](/source/The_Fens).

East Keal church is dedicated to [Saint Helen](/source/Helena_(Empress)), dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, and is built in [Early English](/source/Early_English_Period) and [Perpendicular](/source/English_Gothic_architecture#Perpendicular_Gothic) styles. It was extensively rebuilt in 1853–54 by Stephen Lewin but retains many of its original features.[2] It is a Grade II* [listed building](/source/Listed_building).[3] [Edmund de Grimsby](/source/Edmund_de_Grimsby), later a prominent judge and Crown official, was parish priest here in the 1320s.

East Keal [CE](/source/Christian_school#United_Kingdom) School was built as a [parochial school](/source/Parochial_school) in 1848. It reopened in 1874 as the East Keal [National School](/source/National_school_(England_and_Wales)), became a [Junior School](/source/Junior_School) in 1950, and closed in 1968.[4]

The small village of [Keal Cotes](/source/Keal_Cotes) lies on the border of East Keal and [West Keal](/source/West_Keal).

The East Keal brickworks site was partially excavated by the archaeologist and folklorist [Ethel Rudkin](/source/Ethel_Rudkin).[5]
