13th-century Mongol general

**Dyuden** or **Tudan** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Тудан; fl. 1293) was a brother of [Toqta](/source/Toqta), the khan of the [Golden Horde](/source/Golden_Horde) and a great grandson of [Batu Khan](/source/Batu_Khan).

## Career

Dyuden was appointed as a general by [Toqta](/source/Toqta). His 1293 campaign against Russia devastated 14 towns.[1][2] A combined Russo-Tatar army led by him caused devastation to [Suzdal](/source/Suzdal), [Vladimir](/source/Vladimir%2C_Russia), [Murom](/source/Murom), [Yuryev-Polsky](/source/Yuryev-Polsky_(town)), [Pereslavl-Zalessky](/source/Pereslavl-Zalessky), [Moscow](/source/Moscow), [Kolomna](/source/Kolomna), [Mozhaysk](/source/Mozhaysk), [Dmitrov](/source/Dmitrov), [Uglich](/source/Uglich), and [Volokolamsk](/source/Volokolamsk).[3] The grand prince of Vladimir, [Dmitry](/source/Dmitry_of_Pereslavl), was forced to flee to [Pskov](/source/Pskov), allowing [Andrey](/source/Andrey_of_Gorodets) to take the title of grand prince.[4] Andrey's appanage center of [Gorodets](/source/Gorodets%2C_Nizhny_Novgorod_Oblast) remained untouched by the campaign, as well as the cities in the north that belonged to the princes of [Rostov](/source/Rostov_Veliky).[3]

During the campaign, Andrey and Dyuden planned to take [Tver](/source/Tver), which housed many refugees; however, [Mikhail of Tver](/source/Mikhail_of_Tver) returned in time, which caused Andrey and Dyuden to abort their plan after learning about his presence there.[3] Instead, after devastating the towns of [Vladimir-Suzdal](/source/Vladimir-Suzdal), the two took Volokolamsk.[3] The [Novgorodians](/source/Novgorod_Republic) were able to bribe the Tatars to leave the town and request Andrey to serve as their prince, which satisfied him enough and led to the Tatar troops to be withdrawn.[5]

Dyudan had a son, Shchelkan, who was [Özbeg Khan](/source/%C3%96zbeg_Khan)'s ambassador in the [Principality of Tver](/source/Principality_of_Tver) in 1327.[6]
