The '''Dynamic Museum''' ({{Langx|fr|Musée Dynamique}}) is a museum in [Dakar](/source/Dakar), [Senegal](/source/Senegal).

== History ==
The museum was part of a series of cultural projects initiated by [President Léopold Sédar Senghor](/source/L%C3%A9opold_S%C3%A9dar_Senghor). The museum was inaugurated on March 31, 1966, by Senghor and [André Malraux](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Malraux) and played an important role in the Dakar [Festival of Negro Arts](/source/World_Festival_of_Black_Arts), which ran from April 1 to April 24, 1966.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.theartnewspaper.com/comment/africa-museum-comment-future-western-models|title=Comment {{!}} Why Africa's future museums should forget Western models|website=www.theartnewspaper.com|access-date=2020-02-13}}</ref><ref>{{Cite book|chapter-url=http://www.ep.liu.se/ecp/078/038/ecp12078038.pdf|title=Great Narratives of the Past. National Museums and Great Narratives in French-speaking Africa}}</ref> The museum was designed to act as a decolonial celebration of African culture, and it featured artifacts and history from the [Iron Age](/source/Iron_Age) [Nok culture](/source/Nok_culture) all the way up to the modern era.<ref name="Allais p192"/> Its first exhibition featured over 600 pieces of African art which were borrowed from 50 museums around the world. The [Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris](/source/Mus%C3%A9e_d'Art_Moderne_de_Paris) also loaned the Dynamic Museum works from [Pablo Picasso](/source/Pablo_Picasso), [Fernand Léger](/source/Fernand_L%C3%A9ger), and [Amedeo Modigliani](/source/Amedeo_Modigliani) for an exhibit.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://theconversation.com/the-first-black-arts-festival-was-shaped-by-cold-war-politics-54926|title=The first black arts festival was shaped by Cold War politics|last=Murphy|first=David|website=The Conversation|language=en|access-date=2020-02-13}}</ref>

From the 1960s to the 1970s, the museum featured collections of art and culture from the [history of Senegal](/source/history_of_Senegal), as well as exhibitions of artists such as [Pablo Picasso](/source/Pablo_Picasso), [Friedensreich Hundertwasser](/source/Friedensreich_Hundertwasser), [Pierre Soulages](/source/Pierre_Soulages) and [Marc Chagall](/source/Marc_Chagall). In 1988, the museum was controversially closed and the building repurposed by the Senegalese government as a courthouse. In 1996, [Abdou Diouf](/source/Abdou_Diouf) announced that the museum would be reinaugurated and the courthouse moved, although this never came to fruition.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://beauxartsnantes.fr/le-mus%C3%A9e-dynamique-de-dakar-histoire-et-perspectives|title=Le musée dynamique de Dakar : histoire et perspectives {{!}} Beaux-arts°Nantes|website=beauxartsnantes.fr|access-date=2020-02-13}}</ref> President [Macky Sall](/source/Macky_Sall) returned the building to the arts community in 2016, on the 50th anniversary of the Festival of Negro Arts, so that it could act as a museum once again.<ref>{{Cite journal|last1=Murphy|first1=David|last2=Vincent|first2=Cédric|date=2019-01-02|title=Inside Dakar's Musée Dynamique: reflections on culture and the state in postcolonial Senegal|journal=World Art|volume=9|issue=1|pages=81–97|doi=10.1080/21500894.2018.1493532|s2cid=159128762|issn=2150-0894|url=https://strathprints.strath.ac.uk/67367/1/Murphy_Vincent_WA_2019_Inside_Dakars_Musee_Dynamique_Reflections_on_culture.pdf}}</ref>
