# Dwayne Henry

**Dwayne Allen Henry** (born February 16, 1962) is a former [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball) (MLB) [relief pitcher](/source/Relief_pitcher) who played for the [Texas Rangers](/source/Texas_Rangers_(baseball)), [Atlanta Braves](/source/Atlanta_Braves), [Houston Astros](/source/Houston_Astros), [Cincinnati Reds](/source/Cincinnati_Reds), [Seattle Mariners](/source/Seattle_Mariners) and [Detroit Tigers](/source/Detroit_Tigers). In , he pitched in Japan for the [Chunichi Dragons](/source/Chunichi_Dragons).

Henry was named the Delaware high school male athlete of the year in 1980 by the [*Philadelphia Inquirer*](/source/The_Philadelphia_Inquirer), playing baseball, [basketball](/source/Basketball), and [football](/source/Gridiron_football). He planned to play [college football](/source/College_football) for the [North Carolina Tar Heels](/source/North_Carolina_Tar_Heels_football) before the Rangers selected him in the second round of the [1980 MLB draft](/source/1980_Major_League_Baseball_draft).[1][2]

Henry had [Tommy John surgery](/source/Tommy_John_surgery) in the minors in 1982.[3] Henry made his major league debut on September 7, ,[4] striking out [Chris Speier](/source/Chris_Speier) for his first major league [strikeout](/source/Strikeout) while [walking](/source/Base_on_balls) three in one inning.[5] Henry converted from a [starting pitcher](/source/Starting_pitcher) to a relief role in June 1985. He earned three [saves](/source/Save_(baseball)) with the Rangers that year. He missed much of 1986 with another elbow injury.[3]

Texas traded Henry and cash to Atlanta for Dave Henry on March 30, 1989. Atlanta released him after the 1990 season, and he signed with Houston in 1991.[2] Henry later played in MLB for Cincinnati in 1992 and 1993, Seattle in 1993, and Detroit in 1995, with his stint in [Nippon Professional Baseball](/source/Nippon_Professional_Baseball) for the Chunichi in 1994. His MLB tenure ended when the Tigers released him on October 12, . Henry played in the [Chinese Professional Baseball League](/source/Chinese_Professional_Baseball_League) for the [Wei Chuan Dragons](/source/Wei_Chuan_Dragons) in 1997 and 1998 and [Chinatrust Whales](/source/Chinatrust_Whales) in 2000. He also played in [Minor League Baseball](/source/Minor_League_Baseball) for the [Colorado Rockies](/source/Colorado_Rockies) in 1996, in the [Atlantic League of Professional Baseball](/source/Atlantic_League_of_Professional_Baseball) for the [Somerset Patriots](/source/Somerset_Patriots) in 1998 and 1999 and the [Newark Bears](/source/Newark_Bears) in 2001, and in the [Mexican League](/source/Mexican_Baseball_League) for the [Broncos de Reynosa](/source/Broncos_de_Reynosa) in 2001.[4]
