**Dutton River** is a rural [locality](/source/Suburbs_and_localities_(Australia)) in the [Flinders Shire](/source/Shire_of_Flinders_(Queensland)), [Queensland](/source/Queensland), Australia.[1] In the , Dutton River had a population of 66 people.[2]

## Geography

The *[Flinders River](/source/Flinders_River)* flows through from south-east to south-west. *Dutton River* (the watercourse) rises in the locality and forms part of the western boundary before flowing south-west to join the *Flinders*. The stream known as *Stawell River* or *Cambridge Creek* rises in the locality and flows west to the *Woolgar River*, a tributary of the *Flinders*.[3]

The locality has the following mountains (from north to south):

- Mount Stewart ([20.3552°S 144.0316°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-20.3552_144.0316&title=Mount%20Stewart)) 555 metres (1,821 ft)[4][5]
- Mount Desolation ([20.5096°S 144.162°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-20.5096_144.1620&title=Mount%20Desolation)) 563 metres (1,847 ft)[4][6]
- The Twins ([20.6384°S 143.9113°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-20.6384_143.9113&title=The%20Twins)) 389 metres (1,276 ft)[4]

The predominant land use is [grazing](/source/Pastoralism) on native vegetation.[7]

## History

[Jirandali](/source/Yirandhali_language) (also known as Yirandali, Warungu, Yirandhali) is an [Australian Aboriginal language](/source/Australian_Aboriginal_language) of [North-West Queensland](/source/North_West_Queensland), particularly the [Hughenden](/source/Hughenden,_Queensland) area. The language region includes the local government area of the [Shire of Flinders](/source/Shire_of_Flinders_(Queensland)), including Dutton River, [Flinders River](/source/Flinders_River), Mount Sturgeon, [Caledonia](/source/Barcaldine_Region), [Richmond](/source/Richmond,_Queensland), [Corfield](/source/Corfield,_Queensland), [Winton](/source/Winton,_Queensland), Torrens, Tower Hill, Landsborough Creek, Lammermoor Station, Hughenden, and [Tangorin](/source/Tangorin).[8]

Dalleburra (also known as Dalebura, Dal-leyburra, Yirandali) is a language of [North-West Queensland](/source/Gulf_Country), particularly Lammermoor Station via [Hughenden](/source/Hughenden,_Queensland). The Dalleburra language region includes the local government boundaries of the [Flinders Shire Council](/source/Shire_of_Flinders_(Queensland)).[9]

Dutton River State School opened on 24 January 1972 and closed on 6 June 1977.[10] It was located near the Charlotte Plains homestead (approx [20.4334°S 143.8601°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-20.4334_143.8601&title=Dutton%20River%20State%20School%20(former))).[11][12]

Prior to 19 November 2021, the town of [Marathon](/source/Marathon,_Queensland) was within the locality of [Stamford](/source/Stamford,_Queensland). However, this arrangement caused confusion, so on 19 November 2021, a new locality of Marathon was created around the town, excising the land from the localities of Dutton River and Stamford.[13][14][15]

## Education

There are no schools in Dutton River. The nearest government schools are Richmond State School (Prep-10) in neighbouring [Richmond](/source/Richmond,_Queensland) to the south-west and Hughenden State School (Prep-12) in neighbouring [Hughenden](/source/Hughenden,_Queensland) to the south-east. However, most of the locality is too distant from these schools for a daily commute; the alternatives are [distance education](/source/Distance_education_in_Queensland) and boarding school.[17]
