# Dustin Thomason

**Dustin Thomason** (born February 17, 1976) is an American writer and producer who co-authored the *New York Times* bestselling [historical fiction](/source/Historical_fiction) novel *[The Rule of Four](/source/The_Rule_of_Four)* with [Ian Caldwell](/source/Ian_Caldwell).[1]

## Novels

Thomason began his career as a novelist. He is a co-author of the 2004 novel *[The Rule of Four](/source/The_Rule_of_Four)*, and the author of *12.21*. *The Rule of Four* hit the top of the [*New York Times* Best Seller list](/source/The_New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list), where it remained for six months, sold more than four million copies, and was the best selling [debut novel](/source/Debut_novel) of the decade. *12.21* (concerning the [2012 phenomenon](/source/2012_phenomenon)) was also a New York Times and International bestseller. In addition to television, Thomason's production company, Old Curiosity Shop, has published and produced three young adult novels ("*Antisocial*",[2] "*Soul City*",[3] "*xL*"[4]).

## Television career

Thomason co-created and was showrunner of Hulu's *[Castle Rock](/source/Castle_Rock_(TV_series)),* for which he won the 2019 Writers Guild of America award for long form original television.[5] He also co-created [ABC](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company) drama *[The Evidence](/source/The_Evidence_(TV_series))* and wrote and executive produced Fox's *[Lie to Me](/source/Lie_to_Me_(TV_series))* and WGN America's critically acclaimed [*Manhattan*](/source/Manhattan_(TV_series)). He is currently the Executive Producer of the [David E. Kelley](/source/David_E._Kelley)/[Apple TV+](/source/Apple_TV%2B)'s series *[Presumed Innocent](/source/Presumed_Innocent_(TV_series)),*[6] and the co-creator of *Overlook,* the forthcoming series from JJ Abrams's of [Bad Robot](/source/Bad_Robot) set in the universe of [Stephen King](/source/Stephen_King)'s *[The Shining](/source/The_Shining_(novel))*.

## Personal life

Thomason attended [Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology](/source/Thomas_Jefferson_High_School_for_Science_and_Technology) in [Fairfax County, Virginia](/source/Fairfax_County,_Virginia),[7] then went on to study [anthropology](/source/Anthropology) at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) and received his M.D. and his MBA from [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University) in 2003.[8] He lives and works in [Los Angeles, California](/source/Los_Angeles,_California).

He was childhood friends with *Rule of Four* coauthor Ian Caldwell, whom he first collaborated with in elementary school.[1]
