**Sir Durward Randolph Knowles** (2 November 1917 – 24 February 2018) was a sailor and Olympic champion from The [Bahamas](/source/Bahamas). He won the gold medal in the [Star class](/source/Star_(sailboat)) at the [1964 Summer Olympics](/source/1964_Summer_Olympics) in Tokyo, together with [Cecil Cooke](/source/Cecil_Cooke).[1][2] He won the bronze medal in the same class at the [1956 Summer Olympics](/source/1956_Summer_Olympics) in Melbourne.[3] He had previously competed for the United Kingdom in the 1948 Olympics, finishing in [4th place in the Star class](/source/Sailing_at_the_1948_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Star) together with [Sloane Elmo Farrington](/source/Sloane_Elmo_Farrington).[4] Representing the Bahamas, Knowles also won gold in the [1959 Pan American Games](/source/1959_Pan_American_Games) star class (with Farrington). He is one of only five athletes who have competed in the Olympics over a span of 40 years, along with fencer [Ivan Joseph Martin Osiier](/source/Ivan_Joseph_Martin_Osiier), sailor [Magnus Konow](/source/Magnus_Konow), showjumper [Ian Millar](/source/Ian_Millar), and sailor [Paul Elvstrøm](/source/Paul_Elvstr%C3%B8m).[5]

In 2014, the second [*Legend*-class patrol boat of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force](/source/Royal_Bahamas_Defence_Force#Ships) was commissioned as HMBS *Durward Knowles*. In May 2016, following the death of [Sándor Tarics](/source/S%C3%A1ndor_Tarics), he became the oldest living Olympic champion.[6] He [turned 100](/source/Centenarian) in November 2017[7] and died on 24 February 2018.[8][9]

## Honours

Knowles was appointed [Officer of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Officer_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (OBE) in the [1965 New Year Honours](/source/1965_New_Year_Honours) for public services in the Bahamas.[10]

Knowles was [knighted](/source/Knighted) in the [1996 Birthday Honours](/source/1996_Birthday_Honours) "for services to the community and to sport, particularly sailing."[11][12] In 1997, he was awarded [The Bahamas' Order of Merit](/source/Order_of_Merit_(Bahamas)).[13]
