In the nineteenth century [Eugene O'Curry](/source/Eugene_O'Curry) and [John O'Donovan](/source/John_O'Donovan_(scholar)) both rendered the name into Irish as {{lang|ga|Dún na mBogán}} "Fort of the [softness]", the last word interpreted by O'Curry as "soft eggs" and by O'Donovan as "bogs".<ref name="Phelan">{{cite journal|last=Phelan|first=Mrs. W.J.|year=1952|title=Dunamaggin|journal=[Old Kilkenny Review](/source/Old_Kilkenny_Review)|issue=5|pages=44–47}}</ref>
