He saw service in both [World War I](/source/World_War_I) and [World War II](/source/World_War_II) with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). He later wrote three volumes relating to the medical services of the NZEF in World War II for [New Zealand's official history](/source/Official_History_of_New_Zealand_in_the_Second_World_War_1939%E2%80%9345). He was the first chancellor of [Victoria University of Wellington](/source/Victoria_University_of_Wellington) after the dis-establishment of the [University of New Zealand](/source/University_of_New_Zealand) into its constituent colleges.

==Honours and awards==
