# Duncan McTier

**Duncan McTier** is an [English](/source/England) [double bass](/source/Double_bass) soloist[1] and [professor](/source/Professor). He is a member of the [Fibonacci Sequence](/source/Fibonacci_Sequence_(ensemble)).

## Biography

Born in Worcestershire, England, Duncan McTier studied a degree in mathematics at [Bristol University](/source/Bristol_University) before joining the [BBC Symphony Orchestra](/source/BBC_Symphony_Orchestra) and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. McTier won the Isle of Man International Double Bass Competition in 1982 and since then he has performed often with many orchestras, including the [Academy of St. Martin in the Fields](/source/Academy_of_St._Martin_in_the_Fields), [Royal Scottish National Orchestra](/source/Royal_Scottish_National_Orchestra), [English Chamber Orchestra](/source/English_Chamber_Orchestra), [Scottish Chamber Orchestra](/source/Scottish_Chamber_Orchestra), [BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra](/source/BBC_Scottish_Symphony_Orchestra), Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, [RTVE Symphony Orchestra](/source/RTVE_Symphony_Orchestra) and the [Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne](/source/Orchestre_de_Chambre_de_Lausanne).[2]

He recorded a series of albums with the pianist [Kathron Sturrock](/source/Kathron_Sturrock).

In November 2014 McTier received a non-custodial sentence after pleading guilty to two indecent assaults and one attempted indecent assault, during the 1980s and 1990s, on former students aged between 17 and 23.[3]

From 1996-2014 McTier was a professor of double bass at the [Royal Academy of Music](/source/Royal_Academy_of_Music) in London and is currently[when?] professor at the [Queen Sofía College of Music](/source/Queen_Sof%C3%ADa_College_of_Music) in [Madrid](/source/Madrid), [Spain](/source/Spain).[4] In 2019, McTier retired from *[Zürcher Hochschule der Künste](/source/Zurich_University_of_the_Arts)* in Zürich.[5]
