# Dual wield

**Dual wielding** is the technique of using two [weapons](/source/Weapon), one in each hand, for [training](/source/Training) or [combat](/source/Combat). It is not a common combat practice. Although historical records of dual wielding in [war](/source/War) are limited, there are numerous [weapon-based martial arts](/source/Martial_arts#Variation_and_scope) that involve the use of a pair of weapons. The use of a [companion weapon](/source/Companion_weapon) is sometimes employed in [European martial arts](/source/European_martial_arts) and fencing, such as a [parrying dagger](/source/Parrying_dagger). [Miyamoto Musashi](/source/Miyamoto_Musashi), a [Japanese](/source/Japan) swordsman and *[ronin](/source/Ronin)*, was said to have conceived of the idea of [a particular style of swordsmanship](/source/Niten_Ichi-ry%C5%AB) involving the use of two swords.

In terms of [firearms](/source/Firearm), especially [handguns](/source/Handgun), dual wielding is generally denounced by firearm enthusiasts due to its impracticality.[1] Though using two handguns at the same time confers an advantage by allowing more ready ammunition, it is rarely done due to other aspects of weapons handling.

Dual wielding, both with melee and ranged weapons, has been popularized by fictional works ([film](/source/Film), [television](/source/Television), and [video games](/source/Video_games)).

## History

Dual wielding has not been used or mentioned much in military history, though it appears in [weapon-based martial arts](/source/Martial_arts#Variation_and_scope) and [fencing](/source/Fencing) practices.[2]

The [dimachaerus](/source/Dimachaerus) was a type of Roman [gladiator](/source/Gladiator) that fought with two [swords](/source/Sword).[3] Thus, an inscription from Lyon, France, mentions such a type of gladiator, here spelled *dymacherus*.[4] The dimachaeri were equipped for close-combat fighting.[5] A dimachaerus used a pair of [siccae](/source/Sica) (curved scimitar) or [gladius](/source/Gladius) and used a fighting style adapted to both attack and defend with his weapons rather than a shield, as he was not equipped with one.[5][6]

The use of weapon combinations in each hand has been mentioned for close combat in western Europe during the [Byzantine](/source/Byzantine),[7] [Medieval](/source/Medieval), and [Renaissance era](/source/Renaissance_era).[8] The use of a [parrying dagger](/source/Parrying_dagger) such as a main gauche along with a [rapier](/source/Rapier) is common in historical European martial arts.[9]

North American Indian tribes of the Atlantic northeast used a form involving a [tomahawk](/source/Tomahawk) in the primary hand and a [knife](/source/Knife) in the secondary. It is practiced today as part of the modern Cree martial art Okichitaw.

All the above-mentioned examples involve either one long and one short weapon, or two short weapons. An example of a dual wield of two sabres is the Ukrainian cossack dance [hopak](/source/Hopak).

### Asia

During the campaign [Muslim conquest](/source/Early_Muslim_conquests) in 6th to 7th century AD, [Rashidun caliphate](/source/Rashidun_caliphate) general [Khalid ibn Walid](/source/Khalid_ibn_Walid) was reported to favor wielding two broad swords, with one in each hand, during combat.[10]

Traditional schools of [Japanese martial arts](/source/Japanese_martial_arts) include dual wield techniques, particularly a style conceived by [Miyamoto Musashi](/source/Miyamoto_Musashi) involving the [katana](/source/Katana) and [wakizashi](/source/Wakizashi), two-sword [kenjutsu](/source/Kenjutsu) techniques he called *[Niten Ichi-ryū](/source/Niten_Ichi-ry%C5%AB)*.

[Eskrima](/source/Eskrima), the traditional martial arts of the Philippines teaches *Doble Baston* techniques involving the basic use of a pair of [rattan sticks](/source/Rattan_sticks) and also Espada y daga or Sword/Stick and Dagger. [Okinawan martial arts](/source/Okinawan_martial_arts) have a method that uses a pair of [*sai*](/source/Sai_(weapon)).

[Chinese martial arts](/source/Chinese_martial_arts) involve the use of a pair of [butterfly swords](/source/Butterfly_sword) or [hook swords](/source/Hook_sword).

Famed for his enormous strength, [Dian Wei](/source/Dian_Wei), a military general serving under the warlord [Cao Cao](/source/Cao_Cao) in the late [Eastern Han dynasty](/source/Eastern_Han_dynasty) of China, excelled at wielding a pair of *[ji](/source/Ji_(halberd))* (a [halberd](/source/Halberd)-like weapon), each of which was said to weigh 40 *[jin](/source/Catty)*.

[Chen An](/source/Chen_An), a warlord who lived during the [Jin dynasty (266–420)](/source/Jin_dynasty_(266%E2%80%93420)) and [Sixteen Kingdoms](/source/Sixteen_Kingdoms) period, wielded a sword in one hand and a serpent spear in the other, supposedly measuring at 7 *[chi](/source/Chi_(unit))* and 1 *[zhang](/source/Zh%C3%A0ng)* 8 *chi* respectively.

During [Ran Wei–Later Zhao war](/source/Wei%E2%80%93Jie_war), [Ran Min](/source/Ran_Min), emperor of the short-lived Ran Wei empire of China, wielded two weapons, one in each hand, and fought fiercely, inflicting many casualties on the Xianbei soldiers while mounted on the famous horse Zhu Long ("Red Dragon").

[Gatka](/source/Gatka), a weapon-based martial art from the [Punjab region](/source/Punjab_region), is known to use two sticks at a time.

The Thailand weapon-based martial art [Krabi Krabong](/source/Krabi_Krabong) involves the use of a separate [*Krabi*](/source/Krabi_(sword)) in each hand.

[Kalaripayattu](/source/Kalaripayattu) teaches advanced students to use either two sticks (of various sizes) or two daggers or two swords, simultaneously.

### Modern

The use of a gun in each hand is often associated with the [American Old West](/source/American_Old_West), mainly due to media portrayals. It was common for people in the era to carry two guns, but not to use them at the same time. The second gun served as a backup weapon, to be used only if the main one suffered a malfunction or was lost or emptied.[11]

However, there were several examples of gunmen in the West who used two pistols at the same time in their gunfights:

- [John Wesley Hardin](/source/John_Wesley_Hardin) killed a gunman named Benjamin Bradley who shot at him, by drawing both of his pistols and firing back.[12]

- The Mexican vaquero [Augustine Chacon](/source/Augustine_Chacon) had several gunfights in which he was outnumbered by more than one gunman and prevailed by equipping himself with a revolver in each hand.[13]

- [King Fisher](/source/King_Fisher) once managed to kill three bandits in a shootout by pulling both of his pistols.[14]

- During the [Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight](/source/Four_Dead_in_Five_Seconds_Gunfight), lawman [Dallas Stoudenmire](/source/Dallas_Stoudenmire) pulled both of his pistols as he ran out onto the street and killed one bystander and two other gunmen.[15]

- [Jonathan R. Davis](/source/Jonathan_R._Davis), a prospector during the [California Gold Rush](/source/California_Gold_Rush), was ambushed by thirteen outlaws while together with two of his comrades. One of his friends was killed and the other was mortally wounded during the ambush. Davis drew both of his revolvers and fired, killing seven of the bandits, and killing four more with his bowie knife, causing the final two to flee.[16]

Dual wielding two handguns has been popularized by film and television.[17]

In Russian-language usage, firing two pistols simultaneously is referred to as "Macedonian-style shooting" (Russian: Стрельба по-македонски), a practice involving the use of two pistols, one in each hand.[18]

## Effectiveness

*[MythBusters](/source/MythBusters)* compared many [firing stances](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Firing_stances&action=edit&redlink=1), including having a gun in each hand, and found that, compared to the two-handed single-gun stance as a benchmark, only the one-handed shoulder-level stance with a single gun was comparable in terms of accuracy and speed. The ability to look down the sights of the gun was given as the main reason for this.[19] In an episode the following year, they compared holding two guns and firing simultaneously—rather than alternating left and right shots—with holding one gun in the two-handed stance, and found that the results were in favor of using two guns and firing simultaneously.[20]

Sometimes, their arch enemy [Shredder](/source/Shredder_(Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles)) dual wields with many weapons.

- *[Princess Mononoke](/source/Princess_Mononoke)* features Lady Eboshi dual wielding with a katana sword and a hairpin.

- The [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics) features dual wielding being done by [Deadpool](/source/Deadpool) with two katana swords, [Nightcrawler](/source/Nightcrawler_(character)) with two [sabres](/source/Sabre), [Elektra](/source/Elektra_(character)) with two sais, and [Black Widow](/source/Black_Widow_(Marvel_Comics)) with two [pistols](/source/Pistol) and two [batons](/source/Baton_(law_enforcement)).[21][22][23]

- The [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics) features [Dick Grayson](/source/Dick_Grayson) and [Barbara Gordon](/source/Barbara_Gordon) dual wielding two [bastons](/source/Baston_(weapon)).

- The *[Star Wars](/source/Star_Wars)* franchise features many characters dual wielding two [lightsabers](/source/Lightsaber) or more including [Darth Vader](/source/Darth_Vader),[24] [Ahsoka Tano](/source/Ahsoka_Tano),[25] and [General Grievous](/source/General_Grievous).[26] *[Star Wars: The Clone Wars](/source/Star_Wars%3A_The_Clone_Wars_(2008_TV_series))* features [Palpatine](/source/Palpatine) and his former apprentice [Darth Maul](/source/Darth_Maul) dual wielding two lightsabers each.[27][28] Also, characters dual wielding two [blaster pistols](/source/Blaster_(Star_Wars)) include [Jango Fett](/source/Jango_Fett) and [Bo-Katan Kryze](/source/Bo-Katan_Kryze).[29][30]

- The [*Halo* franchise](/source/Halo_(franchise)) allows dual-wielding weapons in *[Halo 2](/source/Halo_2)* and *[Halo 3](/source/Halo_3)*.

- *[The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe](/source/The_Chronicles_of_Narnia%3A_The_Lion%2C_the_Witch_and_the_Wardrobe)* features the [centaur](/source/Centaur) [general](/source/General) [Oreius](/source/List_of_The_Chronicles_of_Narnia_characters#Adaptations) dual wielding two [longswords](/source/Longsword), and also the oppressive [White Witch](/source/White_Witch) doing the same. It also features the [Minotaur](/source/Minotaur) general [Otmin](/source/List_of_The_Chronicles_of_Narnia_characters#Adaptations) dual wielding a [falchion](/source/Falchion) sword and a [battle axe](/source/Battle_axe).

- [Sora](/source/Sora_(Kingdom_Hearts)) and [Roxas](/source/Roxas_(Kingdom_Hearts)) of the *[Kingdom Hearts](/source/Kingdom_Hearts)* franchise have the ability to dual wield [Keyblades](/source/Keyblade).[35]

- The *[Splatoon](/source/Splatoon)* series features Dualies, a weapon class that debuted in *[Splatoon 2](/source/Splatoon_2)* that involves dual wielding guns. The guns also enable the player to execute a dodge roll for enhanced mobility and accuracy.

- In *[Borderlands 2](/source/Borderlands_2)*, Salvador's unique action skill allows him to temporarily dual-wield any of the game's many guns. [36]

- Dual wielding is a signature element of the *[Max Payne](/source/Max_Payne)* video game series, particularly in the [third game](/source/Max_Payne_3) where every one-handed weapon can be dual wielded.

- The *[Titan Quest](/source/Titan_Quest)* video game series offers dual wielding as an unlockable ability for the Warrior mastery, allowing players to wield both melee and throwable weapons in both hands.

- [Edward Kenway](/source/Edward_Kenway), the protagonist of A[ssassin's Creed IV: Black Flag](/source/Assassin's_Creed_IV%3A_Black_Flag), was a skilled swordsman and developed the ability to fight using two swords (one in each hand). He was also adept at using other weapons such as pistols, knives, axes, and muskets, even employing dual combinations of these weapons.

- [Connor Kenway](/source/Ratonhnhak%C3%A9%3Aton), the protagonist of [Assassin's Creed III](/source/Assassin's_Creed_III), received minimal combat training from the Kanien'kehá:ka (or [Mohawk](/source/Mohawk_people)), becoming a young warrior of the North American tribe. He used a fighting style that involved wielding a tomahawk in his dominant hand and carrying a dagger in his off-hand. In addition to these, he was also capable of wielding various weapons, including a bow, flintlock pistols, poison darts, rope darts, and two hidden blades. He could use several combinations of these weapons simultaneously, thanks to his ambidexterity. Furthermore, his left hidden blade was a pivoting blade, which quickly became an indispensable tool in his arsenal.
