# Drug Tariff

The **Drug Tariff**, also known as **Drug Tariff price**, is the amount that the [NHS](/source/National_Health_Service) in [England](/source/National_Health_Service_(England)) and [Wales](/source/NHS_Wales) that repays [pharmacies](/source/Pharmacies) for [generic](/source/Generic_medication) [prescription medications](/source/Prescription_drug).[1] It differs from [prescription charges](/source/Prescription_charges) which are £9.90 per item/drug as of April 2024 unless exemptions apply.[2]

They are published monthly by NHS Prescription Services, and used as a reference in England and Wales by pharmacists or doctors dispensing in primary care.[3] It covers such issues as the costs of prescription payments for patients, costs of appliances and [blacklisted medicines](/source/Blacklisted_(medicine)).[4]
