The '''drawer test''' is used in the initial clinical assessment of suspected rupture of the [cruciate ligaments](/source/Cruciate_ligament) in the [knee](/source/knee).<ref>{{cite journal | title=Ligamentous restraints to anterior-posterior drawer in the human knee. A biomechanical study | vauthors=Butler DL, Noyes FR, Grood ES | date=Mar 1980 | journal=J Bone Joint Surg Am | volume=62 | issue = 2 | pages=259–70 | doi=10.2106/00004623-198062020-00013 | pmid=7358757 }}</ref>

== Procedure ==
The patient should be [supine](/source/Supine_position) with the hips flexed to 45 degrees, the knees flexed to 90 degrees and the feet flat on table. The examiner positions himself by sitting on the examination table in front of the involved knee and grasping the [tibia](/source/tibia) just below the joint line of the knee. The thumbs are placed along the joint line on either side of the [patellar tendon](/source/patellar_tendon). The tibia is then drawn forward [anteriorly](/source/anteriorly). An increased amount of anterior tibial translation compared with the opposite limb or lack of a firm end-point may indicate either a [sprain](/source/sprain) of the [anteromedial bundle](/source/anteromedial_bundle) or complete [tear of the ACL](/source/ACL_tear).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.wheelessonline.com/ortho/anterior_drawer_test |title=Anterior Drawer Test |work=Wheeless' Textbook of Orthopaedics |date=22 July 2020 |accessdate=}}</ref> If the tibia pulls forward or backward more than normal, the test is considered positive. Excessive displacement of the tibia anteriorly suggests that the [anterior cruciate ligament](/source/anterior_cruciate_ligament) is injured, whereas excessive posterior displacement of the tibia may indicate injury of the [posterior cruciate ligament](/source/posterior_cruciate_ligament).<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.wheelessonline.com/joints/posterior-cruciate-ligament-exam/|title=Posterior Cruciate Ligament Exam|work=Wheeless' Textbook of Orthopaedics|date=22 July 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230224140149/https://www.wheelessonline.com/joints/posterior-cruciate-ligament-exam/|archive-date=2023-02-24}}</ref>
