# Doug Witcomb

**Douglas Frederick Witcomb** (18 April 1918 – 6 August 1999) was a Welsh [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played for the [Welsh national team](/source/Wales_national_football_team) and for [West Bromwich Albion](/source/West_Bromwich_Albion_F.C.), [Sheffield Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.) and [Newport County](/source/Newport_County_A.F.C.) in the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League).[4]

## Club career

A wing-half,[3] Witcomb started playing at [Enfield](/source/Enfield_1893_F.C.) before beginning his [Football League](/source/Football_League) career with [West Bromwich Albion](/source/West_Bromwich_Albion_F.C.) in 1937.[5] In a war-interrupted time with the club, he made 55 appearances and scored 3 goals.[3]

During the war he was a guest-player for [Lovell's Athletic](/source/Lovell's_Athletic_F.C.), the [works team](/source/Works_team) for Lovell's sweet factory in [Newport](/source/Newport,_Wales), [Monmouthshire](/source/Monmouthshire_(historic)), Wales.[6]

In March 1947,[5] he joined [Sheffield Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.) and made 224 [Football League](/source/Football_League) appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals.[7] He also made six [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) appearances for the side.[7]

He joined [Newport County](/source/Newport_County_A.F.C.) for the 1953–54 season in November 1953,[5] making 25 appearances before joining [Llandudno](/source/Llandudno_F.C.).[3]

He made one wartime appearance for [Leicester City](/source/Leicester_City_F.C.) in 1941, playing against [Tottenham Hotspur](/source/Tottenham_Hotspur_F.C.). He failed to score in a 3–0 defeat.[8][9]

## International career

Witcomb attained three caps for the [Welsh national team](/source/Wales_national_football_team), playing in all three of his country's matches in the [1946–47 British Home Championship](/source/1946%E2%80%9347_British_Home_Championship), making his debut on 19 October 1946 in a 3–1 victory over [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_football_team). Wales lost the remaining two matches, 3–0 to [England](/source/England_national_football_team) and 2–1 to [Ireland](/source/Ireland_national_football_team_(1882%E2%80%931950)). He did not score any goals.[10]

He played seven wartime matches for Wales, scoring one goal.[10]
