**Doug Shipman** is an American politician and civic leader who served as president of the [Atlanta City Council](/source/Atlanta_City_Council) from January 2022 to January 2026 after being elected in December 2021. Shipman previously held leadership positions in cultural and nonprofit organizations in [Atlanta](/source/Atlanta).[1]

## Early life and education

Shipman grew up in the rural area of [Bull Shoals, Arkansas](/source/Bull_Shoals%2C_Arkansas). He moved to Atlanta to attend [Emory University](/source/Emory_University), where he graduated [magna cum laude](/source/Magna_cum_laude) in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics. He later earned a Master of Theological Studies degree from the [Harvard Divinity School](/source/Harvard_Divinity_School) and a Master of Public Policy degree from the [Harvard Kennedy School](/source/Harvard_Kennedy_School).[1]

## Career

From 2007 to 2015, Shipman was the founding [CEO](/source/CEO) of the [National Center for Civil and Human Rights](/source/National_Center_for_Civil_and_Human_Rights). In this role, he oversaw the design, construction, and launch of the center.[1][2][3][4][5]

Shipman served as CEO of [BCG BrightHouse Consulting](/source/Boston_Consulting_Group) from 2015 to 2017.[1] He was the President and CEO of the [Woodruff Arts Center](/source/Woodruff_Arts_Center) from 2017 to 2020.[1][6]

### Council

In December 2021, Shipman was elected president of the Atlanta City Council, taking office in January 2022.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] In August 2024 Shipman and other elected officials urged [MARTA](/source/Metropolitan_Atlanta_Rapid_Transit_Authority) and the city of Atlanta to move forward with rail on the [Atlanta Beltline](/source/Atlanta_Beltline).[7][8] Shipman announced in February 2025 that he would not seek a second term in the November 2025 election due to family medical issues.

Shipman currently serves on the board of trustees for [The Carter Center](/source/The_Carter_Center)[9] and as a board member for the [Atlanta International School](/source/Atlanta_International_School). He previously held board positions with the [Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce](/source/Metro_Atlanta_Chamber_of_Commerce), [Midtown Alliance](/source/Midtown_Atlanta), and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau.[1][10]

## Personal life

Shipman is married to Bijal Shah, an associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at [Emory University School of Medicine](/source/Emory_University_School_of_Medicine) and an [ER](/source/Emergency_Room) physician at [Grady Memorial Hospital](/source/Grady_Memorial_Hospital). They have two daughters.[1] He is an avid runner and is on the [Atlanta Track Club](/source/Atlanta_Track_Club) board of directors.[11]
