Redl played for the [Saskatchewan Huskies](/source/Saskatchewan_Huskies_football) from 1974 to 1977. He named to the [Canada West conference](/source/Canada_West_Universities_Athletic_Association) all-star team at [offensive guard](/source/offensive_guard) in 1976 and 1977. He also earned [CIAU](/source/Canadian_Interuniversity_Athletics_Union) All-Canadian honours both years.
