Friedman was selected in the eleventh round of the [1991 NHL entry draft](/source/1991_NHL_entry_draft), 222nd overall, by the [Quebec Nordiques](/source/Quebec_Nordiques). During the [1993–94 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season](/source/1993%E2%80%9394_NCAA_Division_I_men's_ice_hockey_season) Friedman was voted captain of the [Terriers](/source/Boston_University_Terriers_men's_ice_hockey).While at Boston University Friedman was part of teams that won multiple Hockey East Championships, Beanpot Titles, and made the NCAA Final Four three of his four years at BU. Following his playing career, Friedman transitioned into coaching.
