**Donald Teskey [RHA](/source/Royal_Hibernian_Academy)** (born 1956) is an Irish painter.[1] He is a member of [Aosdána](/source/Aosd%C3%A1na).[2]

## Early life

Teskey was born in [County Limerick](/source/County_Limerick) in 1956. He grew up in [Rathkeale](/source/Rathkeale) and graduated from [Limerick School of Art and Design](/source/Limerick_School_of_Art_and_Design) in 1978.[3][4]

## Career

In 1981 he received a prize for drawing at [EVA International](/source/EVA_International), and in 1995 he was presented with the Fergus O'Ryan Award.[5] Originally he was a [draughtsman](/source/Drawing), only moving to painting in the 1990s, depicting [Dublin](/source/Dublin) city and later moving to rural landscapes.[6]

In 2003 he was elected a member of the [Royal Hibernian Academy](/source/Royal_Hibernian_Academy). In 2005, [Limerick City Gallery of Art](/source/Limerick_City_Gallery_of_Art) hosted *Tidal Narratives*, an exhibition of Teskey's paintings and drawings coinciding with the publication of a book by [Gandon Editions](/source/Gandon_Editions). In 2006 he was elected to [Aosdána](/source/Aosd%C3%A1na).[7]

According to deVeres Auctions, "His paintings depict gritty [urbanity](/source/Urbanity) through [thick applied paint](/source/Impasto) with [brushes](/source/Paintbrush) and [knives](/source/Painting_knife). The result is a painting with visceral physicality. At this time Teskey painted from photographs but after a prolonged trip to [Mayo](/source/County_Mayo) in 2000, he began painting landscapes from drawings. His subjects now lie predominantly in the landscape of the [Western seaboard](/source/West_Region,_Ireland), but his work has maintained its urban character."[8] Oliver Sears Gallery says that "Teskey’s works interpret the connection between prehistory and the land and man’s emergence from the sea."[9]

Donald Teskey has made [prints in carborundum](/source/Carborundum_printmaking) and [intaglio](/source/Intaglio_(printmaking)) with Stoney Road Press since 2009.[10]
