# Donald Chalmers

[Vice Admiral](/source/Vice_admiral_(Australia)) **Donald Bruce Chalmers**, (born 29 April 1942) is a retired senior commander of the [Royal Australian Navy](/source/Royal_Australian_Navy) (RAN), who served as [Chief of Navy](/source/Chief_of_Navy_(Australia)) from 1997 to 1999.

## Early life

Chalmers was born on 29 April 1942 in [Young, New South Wales](/source/Young,_New_South_Wales), to Donald Lisle Chalmers and Constance (née Eagles).[1]

## Career

Chalmers joined the RAN in 1958 and chose to specialise in navigation.[2] He served in [HMAS *Yarra*](/source/HMAS_Yarra_(DE_45)) and [HMAS *Parramatta*](/source/HMAS_Parramatta_(DE_46)) during the [Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation](/source/Indonesia%E2%80%93Malaysia_confrontation) in the mid-1960s and went on to command [HMAS *Perth*](/source/HMAS_Perth_(D_38)) from 1981 to 1983.[1][2] He was awarded the [National Medal](/source/National_Medal_(Australia)) in 1977.[3] In 1988, he attended the [Royal College of Defence Studies](/source/Royal_College_of_Defence_Studies) in the United Kingdom.[2] He was appointed as an [Officer of the Order of Australia](/source/Officer_of_the_Order_of_Australia) in 1992 in recognition of his services as Commander of the first Royal Australian Navy Task Group during the [Gulf War](/source/Gulf_War).[4] He was appointed [Maritime Commander Australia](/source/Commander_Australian_Fleet) in December 1993, Assistant Chief of Defence Force responsible for Australian Defence Force development and international defence relationships in April 1995, and finally [Chief of Navy](/source/Chief_of_Navy_(Australia)) in July 1997.[2] He was awarded the [Legion of Merit](/source/Legion_of_Merit) by the United States Government in 1998 and retired in July 1999.[2]
