# Dominick Drexler

**Dominick Drexler** (born 26 May 1990) is a German former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as an [attacking midfielder](/source/Attacking_midfielder).

## Career

Drexler played as a teenager for [Bonner SC](/source/Bonner_SC),[2] [Alemannia Aachen](/source/Alemannia_Aachen),[3] and [Bayer Leverkusen](/source/Bayer_04_Leverkusen)[2] before joining [Rot-Weiß Erfurt](/source/FC_Rot-Wei%C3%9F_Erfurt) in 2010.[4] He made his debut for the club in September of that year, as a substitute for [Tino Semmer](/source/Tino_Semmer) in a [Thuringia](/source/Thuringia) derby against [Carl Zeiss Jena](/source/FC_Carl_Zeiss_Jena) which Erfurt won 2–1. He finished the 2010–11 season with four goals in 19 appearances.[5] He scored eight goals in 34 appearances in the 2011–12 season[5] and four goals in 28 appearances in the [2012–13 season](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_FC_Rot-Wei%C3%9F_Erfurt_season).[6]

In July 2013, he signed for [Greuther Fürth](/source/SpVgg_Greuther_F%C3%BCrth), where he spent the [2012–13 season](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_SpVgg_Greuther_F%C3%BCrth_season),[4] scoring a goal in 11 competitive matches.[2] He also scored four goals in five matches for the [reserve team](/source/SpVgg_Greuther_F%C3%BCrth_II).[2] Then he joined [VfR Aalen](/source/VfR_Aalen) for the 2014–15 season.[4] He scored one goal in 26 competitive appearances.[7] In the following season, he scored nine goals in 32 competitive appearances.[5] He then joined [Holstein Kiel](/source/Holstein_Kiel) for the 2016–17 season.[4] During that season, he scored seven goals in 35 appearances.[8] During the [2017–18 season](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_Holstein_Kiel_season), he scored 14 goals in 34 appearances.[5] This includes two goals in two appearances in the [DFB Pokal](/source/DFB_Pokal) and an appearance in the Promotion playoff.[5]

Drexler signed with [Midtjylland](/source/FC_Midtjylland) for the [2018–19 season](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_FC_Midtjylland_season). The transfer fee paid to Holstein Kiel was reported to be €2.5 million.[9] However, during the same summer he was transferred again to [2. Bundesliga](/source/2._Bundesliga) side [1. FC Köln](/source/1._FC_K%C3%B6ln) for a reported fee of €4.5 million.[10]

On 21 July 2021, he agreed to join [Schalke 04](/source/FC_Schalke_04), newly relegated from the [Bundesliga](/source/Bundesliga), signing a two-year contract,[11] which was extended by a further year due to Schalke's promotion in 2022. On 14 November 2023, the contract was extended until 30 June 2025.[12] On 4 April 2025, Schalke 04 announced that he would retire from professional football at the end of the season and would become a youth assistant coach for the club.[13]
