**Dominic de Burgo** (English: [/dəˈbɜːr/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English) [*də-BUR*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key); c. 1622–1 January 1704) was an Irish [Roman Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church) cleric who was [Bishop of Elphin](/source/Bishop_of_Elphin) in the late 17th century (1671–1691).

## Early life

Burke or de Burgo, was a native of [Craughwell](/source/Craughwell), [County Galway](/source/County_Galway), listed by Hugh Fenning as *Of the family of Cahirkinvonivy.* He was a descendant of the [House of Burgh](/source/House_of_Burgh): the surname "de Burgo" is the [Latinised](/source/Latin) form of this name (with the [gaelicised](/source/Irish_language) form being [de Búrca](/source/De_B%C3%BArca) or Búrc).[1]

## Career

de Burgo was professed at [Athenry](/source/Athenry) in 1648 and studied for six years in [Segovia](/source/Segovia), later living in [Pesaro](/source/Pesaro), [Treviso](/source/Treviso) and [Milan](/source/Milan). He was listed as [Definitor](/source/Definitor) for Ireland at the [General Chapter](/source/General_Chapter) at [Rome](/source/Rome) in 1670.

He was consecrated as [Bishop of Elphin](/source/Bishop_of_Elphin) at [Ghent](/source/Ghent) in 1671, he was disliked by [Oliver Plunkett](/source/Oliver_Plunkett), who stated he was *"extravagant, imprudent in word and deed."* He was exiled in 1691, living in poverty with the Franciscans of St. Anthony's, [Louvain](/source/Leuven), where he died on 1 January 1704.[2][3]
