**Dominic Sena** (born April 26, 1949) is an American film director and music video director. As a film director, he is best known for directing the films *[Kalifornia](/source/Kalifornia)* (1993), *[Gone in 60 Seconds](/source/Gone_in_60_Seconds_(2000_film))* (2000), and *[Swordfish](/source/Swordfish_(film))* (2001). As a music video director, he directed music videos for [Richard Marx](/source/Richard_Marx), [Bryan Adams](/source/Bryan_Adams), [Peter Cetera](/source/Peter_Cetera), [Janet Jackson](/source/Janet_Jackson), and [Sting](/source/Sting_(musician)).

## Life and career

Sena was born in [Niles, Ohio](/source/Niles%2C_Ohio) of [Italian-American](/source/Italian-American) heritage. His family hails from the town of [Bagnoli Irpino](/source/Bagnoli_Irpino), Avellino, Italy. As one of the founders of [Propaganda Films](/source/Propaganda_Films), Sena worked primarily in music videos early in his career. He directed several of [Janet Jackson](/source/Janet_Jackson)'s image re-defining music videos from her *[Rhythm Nation 1814](/source/Janet_Jackson's_Rhythm_Nation_1814)* album. The *[Rhythm Nation 1814](/source/Rhythm_Nation_1814_(film))* short film directed by Sena won the [Grammy Award Best Long Form Music Video](/source/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Music_Film).[1] Other artists that Sena has directed music videos for include [Richard Marx](/source/Richard_Marx), [Tina Turner](/source/Tina_Turner), [Fleetwood Mac](/source/Fleetwood_Mac), [Sheena Easton](/source/Sheena_Easton), [Bryan Adams](/source/Bryan_Adams), [Michael Bolton](/source/Michael_Bolton), [Peter Cetera](/source/Peter_Cetera), [E. G. Daily](/source/E._G._Daily), and [Sting](/source/Sting_(musician)). Sena was also the cinematographer for many of the music videos he directed.[2]

In 1993, Sena directed *[Kalifornia](/source/Kalifornia)*, which starred future Hollywood stars [Brad Pitt](/source/Brad_Pitt) and [David Duchovny](/source/David_Duchovny). While the film garnered good reviews,[3] it was not a commercial success and it was seven more years before Sena stepped behind the camera again.

In 2000, Sena directed the film *[Gone in 60 Seconds](/source/Gone_in_60_Seconds_(2000_film))*, featuring [Nicolas Cage](/source/Nicolas_Cage), [Angelina Jolie](/source/Angelina_Jolie), and [Robert Duvall](/source/Robert_Duvall).
