## Early life and education

Domhnall Gleeson was born on 12 May 1983[1] in [Dublin](/source/Dublin), Ireland.[2] He was raised in [Malahide](/source/Malahide), [County Dublin](/source/County_Dublin), the eldest son of Mary (*[née](/source/N%C3%A9e)* Weldon) and [Brendan Gleeson](/source/Brendan_Gleeson).[3] He has three brothers: Fergus, [Brian](/source/Brian_Gleeson_(actor)) (also an actor), and Rory.[4]

He attended [Malahide Community School](/source/Malahide_Community_School), where he performed in school productions of *[Grease](/source/Grease_(musical))* and *[King Lear](/source/King_Lear)*.[5] Gleeson later graduated with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in Media Arts from the [Dublin Institute of Technology](/source/Dublin_Institute_of_Technology).[4]

## Career

### 2001–2009: Beginnings and early recognition

After graduating, Gleeson began directing and writing for both film and stage. He first appeared in the British television [miniseries](/source/Miniseries) *[Rebel Heart](/source/Rebel_Heart_(TV_series))* in 2001 with [James D'Arcy](/source/James_D'Arcy) and [Paloma Baeza](/source/Paloma_Baeza).[6] Gleeson made his film debut in [Martin McDonagh](/source/Martin_McDonagh)'s short film *[Six Shooter](/source/Six_Shooter_(film))* in 2004, which starred his father.[7] The film won the [Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Live_Action_Short_Film).[7] He was featured in a small role in the 2005 horror comedy *[Boy Eats Girl](/source/Boy_Eats_Girl)*.[6] In 2006, Gleeson starred in the feature film *Studs*, with his father appearing alongside him.[6] He was among the main cast members of [RTÉ](/source/RT%C3%89) comedy television series *[The Last Furlong](/source/The_Last_Furlong)* in 2005.[6] Gleeson appeared on the Broadway theatre show *[The Lieutenant of Inishmore](/source/The_Lieutenant_of_Inishmore)* at age twenty-three, receiving a [Tony Award](/source/Tony_Award) nomination for his role as the dim-witted Davey.[7][8] In late 2007, Gleeson played [Herbert Pocket](/source/Great_Expectations#Miss_Havisham_and_her_family) in the [Hugh Leonard](/source/Hugh_Leonard) adaptation of [Charles Dickens](/source/Charles_Dickens)'s *Great Expectations* at the Gate Theatre in Dublin.[9] The role was described as being "wittily played" by *[Irish Independent](/source/Irish_Independent)* critic Bruce Arnold.[10] Earlier that year he had a role as Bobby in the [David Mamet](/source/David_Mamet) play *American Buffalo*, also at the Gate Theatre.[11][12]

In 2008, Gleeson starred in the one-off RTÉ comedy sketch show *[Your Bad Self](/source/Your_Bad_Self)*, which was broadcast on 26 December that year and later developed into a series in 2010.[6][7]

I thought I'd always have the father-son thing of 'He got you the role'."[14] The 2009 [HBO](/source/HBO) television film *[A Dog Year](/source/A_Dog_Year)* starring [Jeff Bridges](/source/Jeff_Bridges), featured Gleeson as handyman Anthony Armstrong.[16] Also that year, in the film *Sensation*, Gleeson played the role of a young farmer whose "soulless encounter" with a call-girl "develops into a bittersweet love story".[17][18]

Filming took place in [London](/source/London), England, in June 2012.[29] In a largely negative review, Catherine Shaord of *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)* described Gleeson as a "ginger [Hugh Grant](/source/Hugh_Grant)", although she noted that "The effect, at first, is unnerving; as *About Time* marches on, Gleeson's innate charm gleams through and this weird disconnection becomes quite compelling."[30]

In [Lenny Abrahamson](/source/Lenny_Abrahamson)'s *[Frank](/source/Frank_(film))* (2014), he portrayed Jon, a wannabe musician who joins the band of the eccentric, [papier-mâché](/source/Papier-m%C3%A2ch%C3%A9) head-wearing titular character played by [Michael Fassbender](/source/Michael_Fassbender).[31] Gleeson played a small role as a psychotic killer in the Irish drama *[Calvary](/source/Calvary_(2014_film))*, starring his father as a Catholic priest who visits him in prison.[32] His last release of 2014, was [Angelina Jolie](/source/Angelina_Jolie)'s directorial debut, the war film *[Unbroken](/source/Unbroken_(film))*.[33] In the film, Gleeson portrayed a soldier lost at sea after a plane crash in the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean) during the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War). He lost what he described as a "sizable amount of weight" for the role.[33] Along with his father and brother [Brian](/source/Brian_Gleeson_(actor)), Gleeson created and stars in the Immatürity For Charity comedy sketches, which raise money for the St. Francis Hospice in [Raheny](/source/Raheny), Dublin.[34] Gleeson directed and starred in a music video for the [Squarehead](/source/Squarehead_(band)) [charity single](/source/Charity_single) "2025" in 2014, with all proceeds going to Immatürity For Charity.[34]

## Personal life

Domhnall with his father [Brendan](/source/Brendan_Gleeson) at the [Toronto Film Festival](/source/Toronto_Film_Festival) 2015

Gleeson has said that it never crossed his mind to change his surname at the beginning of his career to stay out of his father's shadow. His reasoning was that his father was not as well known internationally at that time, and everyone in the Irish film industry already knew of their relationship.[77][78]

Gleeson met and befriended Irish producer Juliette Bonass while they were in college.[79][80] In 2023, Gleeson and Bonass married.[81] Gleeson and Bonass have worked together on a number of projects, including *Your Bad Self*, *Immatürity for Charity* and *Psychic*.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Alongside his father, Gleeson is an ambassador for St. Francis Hospice, Dublin, after both his paternal grandparents received end-of-life care in St. Francis Hospice in [Raheny](/source/Raheny).[82] In 2013 Gleeson penned a series of comedy shorts in aid of St. Francis Hospice in Raheny and Blanchardstown, called *Immatürity for Charity*. The sketches were billed as a “lowbrow comedy fundraiser" and starred Gleeson alongside appearances from this father and brother. The sketches also included [Amy Huberman](/source/Amy_Huberman), Laurence Kinlan, Tadhg Murphy, [Hugh O'Conor](/source/Hugh_O'Conor), and others.[83]

He shares a love of the English football team [Aston Villa](/source/Aston_Villa_F.C.) with his father, Brendan. He described the team's [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) semifinal win over [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.) at [Wembley Stadium](/source/Wembley_Stadium) in 2015, as one of the "great days of my life".[84]

As of 2021[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Domhnall_Gleeson&action=edit), Gleeson was residing in [Ballsbridge](/source/Ballsbridge), Dublin.[85][2]
