# Domeniko

**Domeniko** (Greek: Δομένικο, ðo'meniko) is a village and a [community](/source/Communities_and_Municipalities_of_Greece) of the [Elassona municipality](/source/Elassona).[1] Before the 2011 local government reform it was a part of the municipality of [Potamia](/source/Potamia,_Elassona), of which it was a municipal district.[1] The community of Domeniko covers an area of 26.911 km2.[2]

## History

The ancient city of [Cyretiae](/source/Cyretiae) can still be traced on the hill where a [church](/source/Church_(building)) dedicated to [Saint George](/source/Saint_George) now stands. It was a very important one and 2 representatives voted in the [Delphic Amphictyony](/source/Amphictyonic_League). In the Roman times the name of the city was changed to "Domeniko". Archaeological finds from the site are presented in the Diachronic Museum of [Larissa](/source/Larissa).

Domeniko was mentioned in the 11th century by [Anna Komnene](/source/Anna_Komnene).[3] Domeniko was the seat of an [Orthodox](/source/Eastern_Orthodox_Church) bishop during the [Byzantine](/source/Byzantine_Empire) period.[3] During the [Axis occupation of Greece](/source/Axis_occupation_of_Greece) almost 150 residents of the village were [executed](/source/Domenikon_massacre) by the [Italian army](/source/Royal_Italian_Army_(1940%E2%80%931946)).[3]

The population of Domeniko is occupied in [animal husbandry](/source/Animal_husbandry) and [agriculture](/source/Agriculture) (mainly [tobacco](/source/Tobacco), [grain](/source/Food_grain) and [almonds](/source/Almond)).[3]
