'''Dombeyoideae''' is a widely distributed [subfamily](/source/subfamily) of the [Malvaceae](/source/Malvaceae), as proposed by the [APG](/source/Angiosperm_Phylogeny_Group). Most of the plants placed here were once assembled with more or less related [genera](/source/genera) in the [paraphyletic](/source/paraphyletic) [Sterculiaceae](/source/Sterculiaceae); a lesser number were placed in the [Tiliaceae](/source/Tiliaceae) which were also not monophyletic.

The Dombeyoideae were originally described by [Carl Beilschmied](/source/Carl_Traugott_Beilschmied) in 1833. In the present delimitation, they contain about 14 genera with about 380 [species](/source/species), some 60% of which are in ''Dombeya'' (one of the most speciose genera of Malvaceae). They grow in the [Old World](/source/Old_World) [tropics](/source/tropics), especially [Madagascar](/source/Madagascar) and the [Mascarenes](/source/Mascarenes) where about two-thirds of the species occur. In the Mascarenes, they are among the most diverse angiosperm groups, analogous to such (unrelated) plants as the [aeonium](/source/aeonium)s on the [Canary Islands](/source/Canary_Islands) or the [silversword alliance](/source/silversword_alliance) of the [Hawaiian Islands](/source/Hawaiian_Islands).<ref>Cao ''et al.'' The subfamily is sometimes further divided into [tribe](/source/tribe_(biology))s (Corchoropsideae, Dombeyeae, Eriolaeneae, Helmiopsideae), but this is more often considered unwarranted. Probably, most or all of these supposed subdivisions are not monophyletic and thus technically synonyms of the whole subfamily.<ref name = hinsley2007a />

Several species are noted for their [timber](/source/timber), which is used for inlays and other artwork. Others – namely from the [type genus](/source/type_genus) ''[Dombeya](/source/Dombeya)'' – are popular [ornamental plant](/source/ornamental_plant)s due to their beautiful flowers. ''[Trochetia](/source/Trochetia)'' is famous for the coloured [nectar](/source/nectar) it can produce, and it often is [pollinated](/source/pollinated) by ''[Phelsuma](/source/Phelsuma)'' [gecko](/source/gecko)s.
