'''Dominic Shipperley''' (born 4 January 1991) is an Australian retired professional [rugby union](/source/rugby_union) footballer who played for the Australian national team in both [test rugby](/source/Test_match_(rugby_union)) and [rugby sevens](/source/rugby_sevens). In [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby), he played four seasons with the [Queensland Reds](/source/Queensland_Reds) from 2011 to 2014, and a further two seasons for the [Melbourne Rebels](/source/Melbourne_Rebels). His regular playing position was [wing](/source/wing_(rugby_union)).

==Early life==
Shipperley was born in [Redcliffe, Queensland](/source/Redcliffe%2C_Queensland). He attended [St Joseph's College, Nudgee](/source/St_Joseph's_College%2C_Nudgee) and in 2008 received an OP1 which is the highest possible mark that can be achieved in the Queensland Certificate of Education.<ref name = reds-2014/> He played for the [Australian Schoolboys](/source/Australian_Schoolboys_rugby_union_team) rugby team in 2008,<ref name = aus-shoolboys/> and with the [Brothers](/source/Brothers_Old_Boys) club in Brisbane.

==Rugby career==
Shipperley was selected for the [Australian Sevens](/source/Australia_national_rugby_sevens_team) squad during the [2009–10 IRB Sevens World Series](/source/2009%E2%80%9310_IRB_Sevens_World_Series), playing in the [Wellington](/source/2010_Wellington_Sevens), [Adelaide](/source/2010_Adelaide_Sevens), and [Hong Kong](/source/2010_Hong_Kong_Sevens) tournaments in the team which finished the series in third place.<ref name = reds-2014/>{{sfn |ARU|2010 |p=42}}

As a member of the [Australia under 20](/source/Australia_national_under-20_rugby_union_team) team that competed in the [2010 IRB Junior World Championship](/source/2010_IRB_Junior_World_Championship) in Argentina, he scored a hat-trick of tries in the team's win against South Africa, with Australia finishing runner-up in the tournament.<ref name = reds-2014/>{{sfn |ARU |2010 |p=36-37}} He was also selected for the Under 20s squad in 2011, but did not travel to the tournament due to his Super Rugby commitments with the [Queensland Reds](/source/Queensland_Reds).<ref name = reds-2014/><ref name = u20-2012/>

Shipperley made his Super Rugby debut for the Reds during the [2011 Super Rugby season](/source/2011_Super_Rugby_season) against the [Hurricanes](/source/Hurricanes_(Super_rugby_franchise)).<ref name = its-rugby/> His breakthrough year came in 2012, beginning in the first game of the Reds' season with his last-minute match winning try against the [Waratahs](/source/New_South_Wales_Waratahs). A 75-metre sprint beating six defenders to score ended a nine-year losing drought for the Reds in Sydney and earned Shipperley the Super Rugby Try of the Year accolade.<ref name = reds-2014/> He started in all 17 matches for the Reds in 2012,<ref name = its-rugby/> and won the Most Improved Player award for the Reds.<ref name = reds-2014/>

Later in 2012 Shipperley received a starting Test debut for [Australia](/source/Australia_national_rugby_union_team) against [South Africa](/source/South_Africa_national_rugby_union_team) for the match in Perth after an injury forced out winger [Drew Mitchell](/source/Drew_Mitchell).<ref name = reds-2014/> He went on to gain two further caps in the [2012 Rugby Championship](/source/2012_Rugby_Championship).<ref name = espn-stats/>

In June 2014 he signed a two-year deal to join the Melbourne Rebels beginning in 2015.<ref name = smh-2014/> A few weeks later, while playing for the Reds against the Rebels, he suffered a badly fractured and dislocated ankle requiring surgery.<ref name = cm-2014/> Shipperley managed to recover from that injury for the Rebels' opening game of the season, however, playing in a famous 20–10 away win against the {{Rut|Crusaders}} in [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch),<ref name=cru-reb-2015a/><ref name=cru-reb-2015b/> He went on to score four tries from twelve Super Rugby matches in 2015.<ref name=ir-stats/>

Shipperley continued his good form for the Rebels in 2016, but missed the second half of the Super Rugby season due to a knee injury.<ref name=smh-2016/> Later that year he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during the 2016 [National Rugby Championship](/source/National_Rugby_Championship) semi-final, forcing him out of all rugby for 2017.<ref name=rebs-2017/>

He was initially included in the Rebels' extended playing squad for 2018,<ref name=reb-v-red-2018/> and played in the [Brisbane Global Rugby Tens](/source/Brisbane_Global_Rugby_Tens) before a further knee injury prompted his retirement from rugby in the early part of the 2018 season.<ref name=ds-calls-time/>
