The city sits on the [Ganana River](/source/Jubba_River) near the [Somali Region](/source/Somali_Region) in [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia), just {{convert|50|km|abbr=on}} north of [Luuq](/source/Luuq).

[Buulo xaawo District](/source/Buulo_xaawo_District) lies west of Dolow near the [North Eastern Province](/source/North_Eastern_Province_(Kenya)).

Dolow town is the seat of one of the Gedo region's seven [districts](/source/Administrative_divisions_of_Somalia), [Doolow District](/source/Doolow_District). 

Dolow is located on the border with Ethiopia alongside the [Dawa River](/source/Dawa_River) where it meets the [Ganana River](/source/Juba_River).
It was recognised as District in mid 19th century
