**Doire** (French pronunciation: [\[dwaʁ\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French) [ⓘ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:LL-Q150_(fra)-J%C3%A9r%C3%A9my-G%C3%BCnther-Heinz_J%C3%A4hnick-Doire.wav)) was a [department](/source/Departments_of_France) of the [French First Republic](/source/French_First_Republic) and of the [First French Empire](/source/First_French_Empire) in present-day [Italy](/source/Italy). It was named after the river [Dora Baltea](/source/Dora_Baltea) (*Doire Baltée*). It was formed in 1802, when the [Subalpine Republic](/source/Subalpine_Republic) (formerly the mainland portion of the [Kingdom of Sardinia](/source/Kingdom_of_Sardinia)) was directly annexed to France. Its capital was [Ivrea](/source/Ivrea) (*Ivrée*).

The department was disbanded after the defeat of Napoleon in 1814. At the [Congress of Vienna](/source/Congress_of_Vienna), the [Savoyard](/source/Savoy_dynasty) [King of Sardinia](/source/King_of_Sardinia) was restored in all his previous realms and domains, including [Piedmont](/source/Piedmont). Its territory is now divided between the [Italian province](/source/Italian_province) of [Turin](/source/Province_of_Turin) and the autonomous [Aosta Valley](/source/Aosta_Valley) region.
