It is located south of [Heidenau](/source/Heidenau), in the [Müglitz](/source/M%C3%BCglitz_(river)) valley and lies at the northeastern foot of the [Eastern Ore Mountains](/source/Eastern_Ore_Mountains). It is accessed by the [Pirna](/source/Pirna) interchange of highway [A17](/source/Bundesautobahn_17), and by the *Dohna (Sachs)* and *Köttewitz* stations of the [Müglitz Valley Railway](/source/M%C3%BCglitz_Valley_Railway).

## History

Coat of arms of Burgaves of Dohna

Dohna is one of the oldest towns in Saxony. Traces of settlement dating back to the 16th century BC ([Bronze Age](/source/Bronze_Age)) have been found. The [Dohna Castle](/source/Dohna_Castle) on a strategic hill at the entrance to the [Müglitz](/source/M%C3%BCglitz_(river)) valley was probably already built in the middle of the 10th century. The town Dohna was first documented as *Donin* in 1040.[3] The name comes from a construction meaning "property of Doň", from the Bohemian first name Zdoň.

The town and its castle controlled two roads from [Saxony](/source/Saxony) to [Bohemia](/source/Bohemia): one through the Müglitz valley, and one over the heights [to Kulm](/source/Kulmer_Steig). The [burgraves](/source/Burgrave) of Dohna controlled a large territory between the [Margraviate of Meissen](/source/Margraviate_of_Meissen) and the [Kingdom of Bohemia](/source/Kingdom_of_Bohemia), stretching from [Rabenau](/source/Rabenau%2C_Saxony) in the west to [Gottleuba](/source/Bad_Gottleuba) in the east. The burgraves of Dohna were defeated in 1402 in the [Dohna Feud](/source/Dohna_Feud), and the town was given to vassals of the [Wettin](/source/House_of_Wettin) Margrave of Meissen. After 1460, when the seat of administration moved to [Sonnenstein Castle](/source/Sonnenstein_Castle) in [Pirna](/source/Pirna), the castle fell into ruins.

In 1587, Fabien I, Burgrave of Dohna, was involved in the [French Wars of Religion](/source/French_Wars_of_Religion) — commanding Protestant mercenaries which were funded by [Elizabeth I of England](/source/Elizabeth_I_of_England) and the [King of Denmark](/source/King_of_Denmark) and confronting the Catholic forces of King [Henry III of France](/source/Henry_III_of_France) at the [Battle of Vimory](/source/Battle_of_Vimory).

The city of Dohna was devastated by [French](/source/France) and [Russian](/source/Russia) troops during the [Napoleonic Wars](/source/Napoleonic_Wars) (1813).

The primary and secondary school was opened in 1891. It was named after [Marie Curie](/source/Maria_Sk%C5%82odowska-Curie) in 1969. In 1994, Köttewitz and Krebs joined Dohna.[4] In 1999, Meusegast and Röhrsdorf joined Dohna.[5] In January 2000, Dohna became the seat of *[Verwaltungsgemeinschaft](/source/Verwaltungsgemeinschaft)* *Dohna-Müglitztal*, which also includes the municipality [Müglitztal](/source/M%C3%BCglitztal).
