**Dog violet** is the common name for various species of the plant genus *[Viola](/source/Viola_(plant))* with unscented [flowers](/source/Flower). The term arose to differentiate them from the scented [sweet violet](/source/Sweet_violet). Species so named include:

- *[Viola canina](/source/Viola_canina)* – heath dog violet
- *[Viola labradorica](/source/Viola_labradorica)* ([syn.](/source/Syn.) *V. conspersa*) – American dog or alpine violet
- *[Viola reichenbachiana](/source/Viola_reichenbachiana)* – early dog violet
- *[Viola riviniana](/source/Viola_riviniana)* – common dog violet

The roots and seeds of this plant are toxic and should not be eaten. A number of species in the genus *[Erythronium](/source/Erythronium)* in the family [Liliaceae](/source/Liliaceae) are sometimes referred to as "dog's-tooth violet".
