***Doellingeria*** is a genus of [flowering plants](/source/Flowering_plant) in the family [Asteraceae](/source/Asteraceae).[1] It contains species formerly included in *[Aster](/source/Aster_(genus))* but now considered to be a distinct genus. They are known commonly as **tall flat-topped asters**[2] or **whitetops**.[3]

There is still some disagreement as to which species should be included in *Doellingeria.* Some authorities include up to 10[4] or 11 species in *Doellingeria*, but [phylogenetic analyses](/source/Phylogenetics) suggest that any Asian plants in the genus should be classified in *Aster*, making *Doellengeria* an [endemic](/source/Endemic) [North American](/source/North_American) genus.[5] A fourth is now treated as *[Oclemena reticulata](/source/Oclemena_reticulata)*.[2]

*Doellingeria* as it is now defined is a genus of [perennial](/source/Perennial_plant) herbs growing from [rhizomes](/source/Rhizome) or woody bases. The unbranched stems grow erect and the tallest can reach 200 cm (79 in) in height. The [alternately](/source/Leaf_shape) arranged leaves have smooth edges and are sometimes woolly or rough-haired. The [flower heads](/source/Pseudanthium) are a few millimeters long and contain 2 to 10 white [ray florets](/source/Ray_florets), sometimes more. The [disc florets](/source/Disc_floret) are light yellow and the lobes at the tips may spread or curl. The fruit is a [cypsela](/source/Asteraceae#Fruits_and_seeds) with a [pappus](/source/Pappus_(flower_structure)) of three rings of white or tan [bristles](/source/Bristles) and an outer ring of scales.[2]
