# Dockmaster

A '''dockmaster''' is a person in charge of a [dock](/source/Dock_(maritime)) used for [freight](/source/freight), [logistics](/source/logistics), and repair or maintenance of [ship](/source/ship)s (a [shipyard](/source/shipyard) or [drydock](/source/drydock)).  This title is distinct from [harbormaster](/source/harbormaster), which is sometimes a higher rank than dockmaster.  A dockmaster is assisted by a deputy dockmaster and an assistant dockmaster.

For example, in the [Port of London](/source/Port_of_London) in the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom), shipping movements in dock complexes, and within a short distance of the [outer lock gates](/source/Locks_and_weirs_on_the_River_Thames) (i.e. in the [tidal river](/source/Tideway)), are under the jurisdiction of a dockmaster and staff. Each assistant dockmaster has a marine staff of about 70. In all, each dock complex employed about 360 marine staff.  The Port of London consists of all the tidal portions of the [River Thames](/source/River_Thames) from [Margate](/source/Margate) on the south coast, [Clacton-on-Sea](/source/Clacton-on-Sea) on the north, through to [Teddington](/source/Teddington) a total of around {{convert|95|mi|km}}.  Up until the 1980s the [Port of London Authority](/source/Port_of_London_Authority) (PLA) dockmasters were responsible for five large enclosed dock systems and miles of [quayside](/source/quayside) isolated from the tides by locks. These systems were [London](/source/London_Docks) and [St Katharine Docks](/source/St_Katharine_Docks), [Surrey Commercial Docks](/source/Surrey_Commercial_Docks), [West India](/source/West_India_Docks) and [Millwall](/source/Millwall_Dock) Docks, [Royal Docks](/source/Royal_Docks), and Tilbury Docks. Of these only Tilbury is operational, along with [DP World](/source/DP_World)'s [London Gateway](/source/London_Gateway).  Eventually Tilbury Docks were privatized and became the [Port of Tilbury](/source/Port_of_Tilbury), with their dockmaster being redesignated as harbourmaster; this led to the PLA harbourmaster being redesignated ''chief harbourmaster''.
