McMahon was born in [Woburn, Massachusetts](/source/Woburn%2C_Massachusetts), attended the [College of the Holy Cross](/source/College_of_the_Holy_Cross) and graduated from [Tufts University School of Dental Medicine](/source/Tufts_University_School_of_Dental_Medicine).

McMahon's only major league appearance was on October 6, 1908, in Boston's next-to-last game of the season. He started against the [New York Highlanders](/source/1908_New_York_Highlanders_season) at the [Huntington Avenue Grounds](/source/Huntington_Avenue_Grounds) and collected an 11–3, [complete game](/source/complete_game) victory, allowing three earned runs (3.00 [ERA](/source/earned_run_average)), 14 [hit](/source/hit_(baseball))s and no [walk](/source/base_on_balls)s while [striking out](/source/strikeout) three over nine innings of work. McMahon played a few years in the [minor leagues](/source/Minor_League_Baseball). He studied dentistry at [Tufts University](/source/Tufts_University) and opened a practice in his hometown of Woburn, Massachusetts, where he died of heart trouble eight days short of his 43rd birthday.
