In botany, the [term](/source/Glossary_of_botanical_terms) is often used to describe the branching pattern of [plant](/source/plant)s. Plants are said to be divaricating when their growth form is such that each [internode](/source/Internode_(botany)) diverges widely from the previous internode, producing an often tightly interlaced shrub or small tree.<ref>{{cite book|title=Flora of New Zealand|author= Allen H.
