# Dirk Bumann

**Dirk Bumann** is a German infection biologist and [professor](/source/Professor) at the [Biozentrum](/source/Biozentrum_University_of_Basel) of the [University of Basel](/source/University_of_Basel), [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland).

## Life

Dirk Bumann studied chemistry and biology at the [Free University of Berlin](/source/Free_University_of_Berlin). In 1994 he earned his doctorate at the [Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry](/source/Max_Planck_Institute_for_Biochemistry) in Martinsried followed by postdoc research at the [Marine Biological Laboratory](/source/Marine_Biological_Laboratory), Woods Hole, US. From 1997 to 2004 Bumann was a research group leader at the [Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology](/source/Max_Planck_Institute_for_Infection_Biology) in Berlin and from 2004 till 2007 he taught and researched at the [Hannover Medical School](/source/Hannover_Medical_School) (MHH). Since 2007 Dirk Bumann is a Professor of Infection Biology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel.[1]

## Work

Bumann‘s research focuses on the study of [pathogenic](/source/Pathogenic) metabolic processes in the bacteria [Salmonella](/source/Salmonella) and [Shigella](/source/Shigella) that cause [typhus](/source/Typhus) and [diarrheal diseases](/source/Diarrheal_diseases).[2] He investigates how these [pathogens](/source/Pathogens) obtain [nutrients](/source/Nutrients) from their host and how they coordinate the individual activities in [metabolic networks](/source/Metabolic_networks) and cause [diseases](/source/Diseases) through their growth. In addition, Dirk Bumann demonstrated that Salmonella within intestinal cells are initially marked through the attachment of [Ubiquitin](/source/Ubiquitin) and finally the phosphorylating protein [optineurin](/source/Optineurin) binds to them. This tags them for special [cell organelles](/source/Cell_organelles), the [autophagosomes](/source/Autophagosomes), which recognize and eliminate them.[3]
