Species of lichen

Diorygma cameroonense Scientific classification Kingdom: Fungi Division: Ascomycota Class: Lecanoromycetes Order: Graphidales Family: Graphidaceae Genus: Diorygma Species: D. cameroonense Binomial name Diorygma cameroonense Kalb (2020)

***Diorygma cameroonense*** is a little-known species of [corticolous](/source/Corticolous_lichen) (bark-dwelling) [script lichen](/source/Script_lichen) in the family [Graphidaceae](/source/Graphidaceae).[1] It is found in the pristine [rainforests](/source/Rainforest) of eastern [Cameroon](/source/Cameroon). This lichen is distinct due to its larger [ascospores](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#ascospores) with more [septa](/source/Septum) compared to the closely related *[Diorygma sticticum](/source/Diorygma_sticticum)*.

## Taxonomy

*Diorygma cameroonense* was [formally described](/source/Species_description) as a new species in 2020 by German lichenologist [Klaus Kalb](/source/Klaus_Kalb). The [species name](/source/Botanical_name), *cameroonense*, refers to the country where it was collected. The [type specimen](/source/Type_(biology)) was collected on 1 April 1999 in Bewala II Village near Ngatto, [East Province](/source/East_Region_(Cameroon)), Cameroon, in a pristine rainforest along the [Boumba River](/source/Boumba_River).[2]

## Description

The [thallus](/source/Thallus) of *Diorygma cameroonense* is corticolous, greenish-grey, and can reach up to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter. It has a smooth to uneven surface and is 100–125 [μm](/source/Micrometre) thick. The lichen's [fruit bodies](/source/Ascocarp) are in the form of [lirellae](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#lirellae), which are single, unbranched or stellately to irregularly branched, and immersed to [erumpent](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#erumpent) with a thick, complete [thalline margin](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#thalline_margin). Ascospores are [ellipsoid](/source/Ellipsoid) and somewhat [muriform](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#muriform), measuring 15–20 by 5–8 μm, with 3–5 transverse and 0–1 longitudinal [septa](/source/Septum) in 1 or 2 segments.[2]

The lichen contains three [lichen products](/source/Lichen_product): [stictic acid](/source/Stictic_acid) (major), [menegazziaic acid](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Menegazziaic_acid&action=edit&redlink=1) (minor), and [constictic acid](/source/Constictic_acid) (submajor).[2]

### Similar species

*Diorygma cameroonense* is part of the genus *[Diorygma](/source/Diorygma)*, which includes other species with small ascospores, such as *[D. microsporum](/source/Diorygma)* from Brazil, Colombia, and the United States (Florida); *[D. pauciseptatum](/source/Diorygma_pauciseptatum)* from Brazil; and *[D. sticticum](/source/Diorygma_sticticum)* from Thailand. *Diorygma cameroonense* is distinguished from these species by its larger and more septate ascospores, as well as its unique chemistry.[2]

## Habitat and distribution

*Diorygma cameroonense* is found in Cameroon, specifically in the East Province. It grows on the bark of trees in pristine rainforests along the Boumba River at an elevation of about 600 m (2,000 ft).[2]
