**Dionysius bar Salibi** (died 1171) was a [Syriac Orthodox](/source/Syriac_Orthodox) writer and bishop, who served as [metropolitan](/source/Metropolitan_bishop) of [Amid](/source/Amid), in [Upper Mesopotamia](/source/Upper_Mesopotamia), from 1166 to 1171.[1] He was one of the most prominent and prolific writers within the [Syriac Orthodox Church](/source/Syriac_Orthodox_Church) during the twelfth century.[2]

He was a native of [Melitene](/source/Melitene), on the upper [Euphrates](/source/Euphrates). His [baptismal](/source/Given_name) name was Jacob. He assumed name 'Dionysius' upon consecration to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate). In 1154, he was ordained [bishop of Marash](/source/Bishop_of_Marash) by the patriarch [Athanasius VII bar Qatra](/source/Athanasius_VII_bar_Qatra);[3] a year later the [diocese of Mabbug](/source/Diocese_of_Mabbug) was added to his charge.[4] In 1166, new patriarch [Michael the Great](/source/Michael_the_Syrian), the successor of Athanasius, transferred him to the metropolitan see of [Amid](/source/Amid) in Mesopotamia, and there he remained until his death in 1171.[1][5]

Of his writings probably the most important are his exhaustive commentaries on the text of the Old and New Testaments, in which he skillfully interwove and summarized the interpretations of previous writers such as [Ephrem the Syrian](/source/Ephrem_the_Syrian), [Chrysostom](/source/Chrysostom), [Cyril of Alexandria](/source/Cyril_of_Alexandria), [Moses Bar-Kepha](/source/Moses_Bar-Kepha) and [John of Dara](/source/John_of_Dara), whom he mentions together in the preface to his commentary on [St Matthew](/source/Matthew_the_Apostle). Among his other main works are a treatise against heretics, containing *inter alia* a polemic against the [Jews](/source/Jews) and the [Muslims](/source/Muslims); liturgical treatises, epistles and homilies.[1]

His polemical works also include treatises on [Melkites](/source/Melkite),[6] and [Armenians](/source/Oriental_Orthodox_Armenians).[7]
