== Education and career ==
In 1945, Hou obtained a botany degree from the [National Chung Cheng University](/source/National_Chung_Cheng_University_(Jiangxi)) in Jiangxi, becoming a botanical assistant there on graduation. From 1947 to 1951 he was a botanical assistant at the [National Taiwan University](/source/National_Taiwan_University) in Taipei. He obtained a master's degree and PhD from [Washington University in St. Louis](/source/Washington_University_in_St._Louis) in 1952 and 1955 respectively. During this time he also worked for the [Missouri Botanical Garden](/source/Missouri_Botanical_Garden). In 1955 he became a botanist at the [Arnold Arboretum](/source/Arnold_Arboretum) at Harvard University. In 1956, he was hired by [Professor Cornelis van Steenis](/source/Cornelis_Gijsbert_Gerrit_Jan_van_Steenis) at the [National Herbarium of the Netherlands](/source/National_Herbarium_of_the_Netherlands), working on the ''[Flora Malesiana](/source/Flora_Malesiana)'' project. He worked at the National Herbarium until his retirement in 1986.<ref name="Blumea46-2" />

Hou has made significant contributions to the plant families [Anacardiaceae](/source/Anacardiaceae), [Anisophylleaceae](/source/Anisophylleaceae), [Aristolochiaceae](/source/Aristolochiaceae), [Celastraceae](/source/Celastraceae), [Rhizophoraceae](/source/Rhizophoraceae), [Thymelaeaceae](/source/Thymelaeaceae) and later to [Leguminosae](/source/Leguminosae).<ref name=ASBS/>
He named over 100 plant species, including ''[Anisophyllea corneri](/source/Anisophyllea_corneri)'', ''[Bruguiera exaristata](/source/Bruguiera_exaristata)'' and ''[Gluta sabahana](/source/Gluta_sabahana)''.<ref name=IPNI/> The species ''[Aristolochia dinghoui](/source/Aristolochia_dinghoui)'', ''[Parishia dinghouiana](/source/Parishia_dinghouiana)'' and ''[Thottea dinghoui](/source/Thottea_dinghoui)'' are named for him.<ref name=ASBS/>
