**Dimitri Dmitrievich Venediktov** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Дмитрий Дмитриевич Венедиктов; June 8, 1929 – March 27, 2021) was a Soviet and Russian politician who was the Deputy Health Minister of the [USSR](/source/USSR) from 1965 to 1981 under [Ministers of Health](/source/Ministry_of_Health_(Soviet_Union)) [Boris Petrovsky](/source/Boris_Petrovsky) and [Sergei Burenkov](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sergei_Burenkov&action=edit&redlink=1).[1] In this role, he was instrumental in the [campaign to eradicate smallpox](/source/Eradication_of_smallpox) and supplying vaccines for the program [2] He was also involved in organizing the [Conference of Alma-Ata](/source/Declaration_of_Alma-Ata) which was foundational in the field of [public health](/source/Public_health).[3] He was elected to the [Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union](/source/Congress_of_People's_Deputies_of_the_Soviet_Union) from 1989 to its dissolution.[1] He later served on the [Russian Academy of Medical Sciences](/source/Russian_Academy_of_Medical_Sciences), focusing on information storage in healthcare. Venediktov died in Moscow on March 27, 2021, at the age of 91.[4]

## Awards

Venediktov received two [Orders of the Red Banner of Labour](/source/Order_of_the_Red_Banner_of_Labour) and one [Order of the Badge of Honour](/source/Order_of_the_Badge_of_Honour) amongst other awards.[1]
